It's a very cool app. It would be great to tap on a plane and see its source and destination airports. My kids always ask where I think a plane is going and it would be great to have a way to easily tell them!

I don't think they're saying that at all. I think the point was, a payroll tax won't necessarily increase costs for a company because it would be offset by eliminating the current healthcare costs.

It depends on if your company capped how much you could accrue. However much you accrued should be paid out.

If Amazon is engaging in trademark infringement, lying about their connection\collaboration with the trademark holder, and including commercially licensed technology in an open source fork of a project, they are acting very poorly. Your argument of Amazon just being able to execute better falls flat if these facts are true and it means they're cheating, and that deserves some recognition.

With EVs that you can charge at home, that means that for your normal driving that you probably do 80 to 90 % of the time, you NEVER need to stop to "fill up" because you charge every night at home. The tradeoff is that when you do decide to drive more than 250 to 350 miles in one trip, you'll need to take at least one break where you charge.

If you optimize only for the long journeys, you miss out on the benefits from normal driving which you probably do a lot more often.

This seems unlikely given that the Volt has been canceled and much of the momentum is moving towards electric only platforms, even from the major manufacturers.

The author's methodology seems to subtract each year for inflation, so if he's comparing a post-inflation number year to year, and it's the same 20 years later, you've actually done much better than a 1.1% savings account.

In the example where you cache the todo list and use an array of the todo item ids plus the max updated time, why is that approach better than just updating the list updated_at time whenever a child record is changed? With your approach, each todo item needs to be pulled from the db which should be slower than just checking the parent's updated at time for a cache hit.

When Facebook opened their second data center, they basically had one be read/write and the other just read (if I remember correctly). You could do something similar and if a user causes a write or update, keep track in a cookie and use only the master for their reads and writes for a period of time equal (or longer) than the typical replication length. Then when the time expires, start using the slaves for their reads.

I'm sure there are better ways than this, it's just one that I know has been used in production with some success.

I have, and I can tell you that the speed at which they are able to search for transactions is disturbing. Regardless of if it's related to indexes or another cause, it's still a huge issue for people who have to use PayPal. That appears to be the point the parent comment was trying to make.

That's certainly one way to look at it. In my opinion, Stripe should be the entity responsible for fraud management and not left up to the individual implementations, but I can certainly see your point of view as well.

Thanks Ross. I can certainly understand an address typo, but a CVC typo seems like a valid reason for denying a transaction. Glad to hear that you're aware and are working on tools to help us!

Thanks for the response and follow up details. I do realize that this is possible with Stripe, but when using software that already integrates with Stripe, doing additional custom integration is less than ideal. I would also argue that it violates the principle of least astonishment to have a charge go through when the supplied data is inaccurate.

I'm a huge fan of Stripe and find the API incredibly well designed which is why I was so surprised when I came across this today. It's certainly not causing me to migrate away from Stripe, it just means that I'll have to manually keep an eye on things for now.

Thanks for the response. I use Stripe for 3 companies and absolutely love it! While giving us full control is nice, it doesn't help when we're using a pre-built integration, like an ecommerce platform that supports Stripe. In this case, we either need to re-write the Stripe integration or accept that we have no automatic fraud controls.

This is great news. While working with Stripe today, I noticed something a bit unnerving. The Stripe charge method will create a charge even if the CVC and the AVS fraud checks fail. It's then up to you to monitor this and reverse the charge if you feel it's too high risk (there's no fee reversal though). There are ways to get around this with custom development, but that doesn't help for people who are using software that's already integrated with Stripe. It would be great to see a fraud setting that would allow you to prohibit charges from going through depending on what checks fail.

Selling twitter handles is against their tos. Even proposing it would probably cause twitter to confiscate the name.

Chrome 17 is a beta release. It seems to work fine in Chrome 16 on OS X.
