Update: Just got through to tech, they are working late. Apparently our issue is an edge case but there are a bunch of problems with their OS update and automatic rollback. Here's the temporary fix: to reboot a Nest, press it for 10 or 15 seconds. Then, when the Nest is booting up, go into Settings and disconnect the Nest from the Internet so it doesn't try to software update endlessly. That has worked and we thankfully have heat again. I generally like my Nest and have found their support to be excellent, so I'm pretty patient, but it is definitely exasperating to hold a crying baby while calling tech support in the middle of the night because of a failed software update on my thermostat!

COPPA compliance includes no marketing to children, even with parental consent. So they'd have to operate a completely different platform for children. Plus their business model is based on marketing, so they'd take a huge loss operating a second platform for kids. It is stupid to expect Google to accommodate children.

It isn't a belief. Even if Google obtained parental consent by law it still can't market to children-- since Google's services are a giant marketing engine, it is reasonable for them to disable children's accounts.

The law goes a lot further than that, the law prevents Google from marketing to children, so it would have to disable ALL of its marketing and tracking programs for children's accounts. It is reasonable for Google to scuttle the account instead, these services are not intended for children.

The problem is that socialism and totalitarianism are separated only by degree. Socialism, by definition, uses government force to take resources/freedom/time/opportunity from some people and redistributes those goods to politically favored groups.

The growth in the divide is caused by changes in CEO compensation that reward CEOs of public companies with large stock option rewards. In theory this is a reform-- only CEOs with rising stocks should get paid. Also just looking at the top public companies isn't really representative of the economy as a whole. The median CEO really makes around $360,000, which is a respectable 9-1 ratio.

So FedEx Smart Post creates the same problem for me-- I have to go to town during Post Office hours to pick up the package (and usually wait in line). I would also pay for a UPS/FedEx only Prime. I sometimes force the issue for important or large deliveries by ordering it Next Day for $3.99 more, which ensures UPS/FedEx to my home.

It really shouldn't be painful to see people succeed. Successful investors are putting money back into the startup ecosystem.
