I love both the show & Egan's writing, but Egan's stuff feels a lot more optimistic to me. I do like the theory that things are not quite what they seem in Severance and there might be a Ndoli Jewel-type device involved.

I've had good luck with Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pens as a left hander. Surprisingly not very smudgy.

I believe the iPhone 1 didn't have an oleophobic coating, which I think is what normally gets scratched. IIRC it was just plain glass, which is a lot harder to scratch.
Persi Diaconis is fascinating, it's definitely worth reading through his biography [1].
A small preview: after leaving high school at 14 to travel as a magician, a little more than a decade later he managed to get into grad school at Harvard, largely due to a letter of recommendation about his magic abilities (apparently that's a thing).
I also really enjoyed that he was shy revealing his background in magic to other Stanford faculty until he discovered that Paul Lévy also studied perfect shuffling [2].

By "similar functionality" are you talking about domains? If so, it's been deprecated for quite a while, but has never been removed.
Make sure Low Power Mode is off, if it's on it'll have a big effect on performance.

Try using MacVim, it performs much better than using vim with any terminal emulator in OS X.

I'm also left handed and have tried out way too many pens. As others have suggested, Uniball Jetstream pens are fantastic and are nearly impossible to smudge by accident. They also come in a variety of sizes. I really like the 0.38mm for taking notes on the small margins of academic papers.
The main pens I've been using these days are disposable fountain pens [1]. They write great and somehow the ink rarely smudges, though more often than with the Jetstreams. But overall I find it more pleasant to write with fountain pens.
