I really want something like this that will work for pages behind a login. Would love it for my bank and credit card transactions all in one place, without having to use a 3rd party data mining service.

@netlify I hope you see this. You are terrible at the buyer-pull. We want log shipping, but to get that, we have to go into the "enterprise" tier... We are a startup with very little money, and what is log shipping worth to us? Not hundreds a month. Honestly it's worth a little less than whatever the cost of us moving to Vercel is (where log shipping is not part of enterprise).

So now I've now been through multiple sales emails from them trying to get me on a call to "discuss how we can help you" which I know is just going to be Netlify trying to upsell me into a bunch of "enterprise" features we don't need. Just tell me the price and let me click a button to enable it!

This looks like exactly what I need, but our DB is Postgres on Supabase and I don’t think their version supports transaction locking…

As the poor sap who’s had to build lots of these types of sites, I’ll tell you that it’s not the devs that want this. It’s the damn client that keeps complaining about the “gravity” or the “momentum” or the “scroll speed” of the site. Locomotive.JS being the main thing clients want us to use… no amount of explanation of all your valid points will persuade them if “this one cool site we like had it”.

I will say this… the scroll speed being different between Chrome, Safari and Firefox doesn’t help our cause… wish these were normalized at the very least so we can avoid “it feels better in X, but we use Y browser” notes.

Allowing an easing function API for scroll would be a middle ground I could live with. It’s better than what we have now (a bunch of award winning sites emulating scroll with translates).

At my agency we probably build two custom sites a month. We used to do this with PHP WordPress templates, then we moved to Nuxt server side rendered on Node (Heroku), but now we are all static site Nuxt on Netlify and it’s SO MUCH better. Headless WordPress as backend. As long as you/client can deal with the build times it’s fantastic from a speed, SEO and uptime POV. Also just way cheaper to host it. Incremental Static Generation seems like the ideal solution, looking forward to that with Nuxt 3.

I assumed the point of this product was to buy it in a tax deferred account, then loan against it. You’d have zero risk of a margin call ever happening. Then after you’re dead it’s a guaranteed payoff of the loan. Would be a very very cheap way to convert your tax deferred accounts into tax free liquid cash now.

Fantastic summary of Gutenberg’s mistakes. They also completely missed the Headless CMS movement when they designed Gutenberg this way.

Having said all of that, we use Headless WordPress for many many client projects and have got it working really well for us. For us it’s much better than Sanity, Craft and Prismic. The WP-GQL plugin and ACF are really amazing.

I think you missed my point. Our land is super cheap for LA (hence all the infrastructure work). Even if we built a garden shack on it, we’d have spent $600k. How could a working class family ever afford to build a house like this?

If the goal is more houses, make them faster and easier to build. Less red tape, less infrastructure requirements. Otherwise it’s only well of people like me that can (barely) afford them.

Now I’m sure you’ll say “don’t live in a coastal city then”. That where the work is. And it’s also where 40k homeless people live. Connect the dots. We need more houses. There is land to build them, it’s just insane to do that under current rules.

In 2019 I purchased land in Mt Washington, about 15mins outside downtown Los Angeles for $200k. My father is a builder back home in Australia so we know more about building that most. Even the after 3+ years, we finally received permits. The city is making us widen the road ($75k), extend a water main 12 feet ($75k), move 3 power poles (can’t get LADWP to tell us what that’s going to cost yet as they have to design it) and install a septic system. We are going to go all electric so we don’t have to run gas lines.

The amount of bureaucracy is insane. Often times we have been the go between for different departments of city that have offices in the same building as each other. They all point the finger at each other. Can’t get answers to the power pole questions from LA DWP without Bureau of Street Lighting, Bureau of street lighting won’t do anything with out LA DWP etc… it’s madness.

House will be 3200sqft, very nice with a pool but lots of value engineering (thanks to my dad). Construction budget is $2m. Will be getting a construction loan. Requires monthly income of $35k combined. Lucky I’m doing this with my twin brother, so we might just be able to afford it, but currently can not due to interest rate rises since we started. Swinging big.

Bank appraised finished project at $3.5m.

My take away from the whole process is that LA infrastructure is terrible, and the city has effectively made it impossible for new construction by family’s. LA DWP single handedly cost us a year in permitting and its incentives are just so not aligned with home owners. My dream is we can go solar and batteries and tell them to get lost. I now have a real respect for what Starlink is doing. Down with the entrenched utilities!!!

You have to be rich to build a house in LA. Renovation is the only real option for individuals. Which just drives up house prices. New houses built is the only way out I think, and the government seems to only be making it harder.

I’d like to chime in and say we’ve been using Signals for probably 4 months now. We have it setup to send every two weeks. My company is 20 people.

It’s been really good to get quick feedback on the happiness of our employees. It’s been interesting the ups and downs that come through. A lesson I’ve learned is you don’t want to be too reactive, as things change quickly depending on the week. But you can pick up trends over a few iterations (for us, it was people wanted more social events organized).

One thing we really wanted to solve was allowing people a chance to break out of management hierarchies and go direct to founders. Even in a small company like ours, we had some middle management that blocked feedback. This has allowed people to bypass that. It’s a modern “my door is always open” system that seems to work so far.

On the anonymity discussed here, I’d say it’s anonymous in terms of the platform hides everything from us. But when you’re small like us, you tend to be able to guess who said what based on tone or writing style. But I think the point about the kind of company that wants to use this is a good one. We are using it because we care about what our employees think, not as a way to trap people and use it against them.

Sadly I’m not surprised by this blatant manipulation of government by the utility companies.

I’m building a house about 15mins outside downtown Los Angeles. It’s on empty land on a public street. There is no power to the property. LADWP is requiring us to move/install 3 poles, and upgrade the transformer. Probably around $75k cost to us. Has to be their people doing the work.

The Bureau of Street Lighting is also going to require us to move another pole that just has their street light on it with low voltage to it.

I’ve been trying so hard to tell them all to get F’d and just install solar and a bunch of batteries instead. But they’ve told me it’s illegal to that (something about freezing to death).

Oh and we have to widen the road ourselves too!

The whole thing is insane. So they’ve basically created a system where we have no choice but to pay for the utilities failing infrastructure.

What’s the best pathway for an Australian on an E3 visa to transition to a greencard? Do I have to go to a different visa type first? I’ve had 8 E3s so far.

I hired two part time people from one of those threads. In my experience, they produce the highest quality candidates that traditional job listing sites.

I run a 20 person digital agency in Los Angeles.

The amount of time we have to spend each year sorting out our healthcare for the entire company is mind blowing. You are totally correct, it becomes a full time job for 3 or 4 weeks for myself and another partner. So much effort and knowledge required for something that isn’t even our core business! And it inevitably causes drama with employees who don’t like some part of the group plans we end up with. Very stressful.

We only offer it as our employees all say that this benefit is really important to them. I didn’t know it was a tax break for us to be honest.

I wish more employees thought like you did. Our average monthly cost per employee is about $500 for a “silver” PPO plan, and about $110 for dental. Average age of our employees is below 30.

I’d gladly pay employees the $610 extra a month just so we don’t have to deal with it and the drama that comes with it. This would actually save us money from the energy wasted dealing with insurance companies. And no one who’s dealt with our insurance plans over the years has had a positive experience. My brother (who worked for my company) cut his chin while out of state. Required 2 stitches, and he just walked to the closest ER to get them. $3500 it ended up costing him, even with our insurance and countless hours fighting the insurance companies too. Didn’t even see a doctor, a nurse did the stitches. It’s a joke.

Other than salaries, health insurance is the largest expense for our business. Think about that at the scale of the entire economy and its mind blowing the wasted energy/effort on this “system”.

I’m originally from Australia. We have “socialized” healthcare there. My brother is back visiting family currently and got an x-ray and ultra sound for $310. The American system is absolutely embarrassing.

My advice: Just do your best, pick a direction that makes sense to you, be consistent with it, and be OK with changing your approach to work with a new team.

I’m trying to build a house on empty land in Los Angeles. It’s about 15mins from downtown in Mt Washington. We bought the land in April of 2019 and started on the design and permitting process immediately. Despite it being in populated Los Angeles, we need a septic system, to widen the road and add curbs, move a power pole, relocate 3 trees, and extend a water line. We won’t have gas as we want to go all solar. All of this the city is making us pay for.

Our permit for a small septic system took 14 months to approve.

The power department has told us it will likely take 12 months for them to approve the pole movement (the city is making us move it as part of the road widening).

The water main needs to be extended 12 feet, and it’s mandated that the utility company must do that work and it will cost us $75k.

The tree permit took us 12 months to get and requires us to get a bond too.

We still haven’t got approval for the road widening, it’s been almost 18 months. Keep in mind this is just the road in front of our house in a residential area of Los Angeles. There are lots of homes on our street already.

Los Angeles has a huge housing shortage. If my experience is anything to go by, it’s because the bureaucracy is so dense it takes years to just get the permits in place. It would be cheaper and better if I could just pay a bribe and get it done quickly.

Americans seem to know what the problem is, but just accept that nothing can be done about it. Like you all know the DMV sucks and the USPS sucks, but everyone has just accepted that’s it’s just the way it is and decided to live with it. Why?! Hold your officials accountable to actually run government effectively.
