According to Google Maps "measure distance" tool it's ~630 miles, or ~1000 km. I am very surprised it was felt so strongly at such a distance.

I see a lot of complaints regarding ChatGPT 4's performance in coding tasks. My hypothesis is that Microsoft wants to launch Copilot X based on GPT-4 [0], and they can't have OpenAI's ChatGPT 4 as a strong competitor.

I'm sure it's because the number of people on 5G is drastically lower than the number of people on 4G/LTE.

5G has increased capacity over 4G, so even if all 4G users would switch to 5G, you will still have better service.

As I understand, OpenAI started as a non-profit entity and has taken on large donations. Then, the for-profit entity has been created and is using the technology developed by the non-profit entity, which was developed presumably by using the donated funds. So, maybe it's not about altruism at all, but instead Sam Altman is just protecting himself against potential lawsuits from the donors? There was probably some agreement on how the technology will be used.

Elon Musk has donated $100M USD, and does not look happy about the developments, based on his tweets.

Not disagreeing with you here, but buying full licenses adds up too. And you will likely have to buy "upgrade" licenses when new versions are released.

That being said, I do like the license model that JetBrains uses for their products: if you pay for the subscription for more than 12mo, when you stop, you get to keep a perpetual license for the latest version that was released during the last 12 months of paid subscription (I hope I got it right).

I see this argument way too often. How many electricians and plumbers does the world really need? And if the market becomes over saturated, how much will those jobs pay? How often will you actually have a job to do?

I gave up on e-ink readers a few years ago and donated a couple of them. I am reading books in eletronic format on iPhones. It's just more practical, I don't need to carry a second and usually larger device with me, and ... I don't need an external light when it's too dark to read. Plus, the newer iPhones with OLED displays are pretty good for reading.

Proton Bridge has a local cache, which can be disabled. I do wonder if doing so would fix this problem.

That is literally the selling point of ProtonMail: the email is encrypted in storage on their servers (they don't have access to it), and thus you have to decrypt it locally on your machine, and the Bridge does that for you, because your email client does not know how to handle the encrypted content otherwise.

My opinion is that the 2nd book is the best of the trilogy, followed closely by the 3rd. The 1st, I could have done without, except that there's some information that will help make sense of things in the 2nd. Maybe a good summary can replace the 1st book entirely for some readers.

To answer your question, I think it's worth reading them. I enjoyed them both. There are some smart ideas in there, the Dark Forrest Theory being probably the most famous, and one in particular that is overlooked: an interesting (fictional) explanation for dark matter. There are some good characters too. Also, they're better written (or maybe better translated?).

The story progresses faster into the future, with some characters remaining present throughout the books (cryonics FTW), and there are some ups and downs, so it's not all dark and gloomy and pessimistic. But overall, I maintain that the story is one of pessimism.

I read the trilogy, which is actually named “Remembrance of Earth’s Past”, with “The Three-Body Problem” being the first, and IMO the weakest of the books.

Great read, but I can’t see how anyone would be optimistic about humankind after reading them: a group of humans who think we should be eradicated and invited aliens to do it, or at the least enslave us; collaborators when that eventually happens; and then as you mentioned, MAD, and then a series of bad, emotional decisions, all leading to near extinction.

I just can’t find any optimism in there. And it feels very realistic. I read the entire series during the pandemic, lockdowns, and the poor management of all of it, and the books resonated way too well.

Watch notifications are a positive for me, _after_ I disabled all but the apps I care about (plus, in messaging apps I muted all but the persons I need to communicate with in real time). Every time I get a notification and the Watch is not on my wrist I am annoyned by the phone vibrating on the desk, or wherever it is.

In any case, I wear it mostly for the health monitoring. Notifications as described above are a benefit for me, but I would probably not wear it for that alone.

Have you considered that you may have been drugged?

I am at the 5th and 4th replacements (left and right, or might be the reverse). I do hope these issues were fixed in 2nd gen.

At one time, I have found a YouTube video describing how to fix the noise cancelling issue by literally sucking on the external microphone grille of the malfunctioning AirPod. Oddly enough, it did fix the problem temporarily. I think there may be a valve that is used to equalize the pressure between the sealed ear and the outside, and if that gets stuck opened or closed the noise cancelling fails. In my case, low frequency sounds were passing through. Very annoying.

Worth noting, I had the clicking noise issue with Sony WH-1000XM3, too. The behavior was exactly the same as with the AirPods Pro. Whenever a change in pressure occurred (door/window closed or opened), and during walks or even just moving the head in certain ways, the clicking noise started. This only happened when ANC was active, both for AirPods Pro and for the Sonys.

With Apple, I never had any problems getting a replacement, and it was in two countries that do not have official Apple Stores. However, with the Sony it was a completely different story. I had them fixed in warranty, just to find out they were not actually fixed. They replaced the headband that had really nothing to do with the problem. Eventually, after lots of emails and calls, the store I bought them from just gave me back my money.

I just hope they fixed the crackling/static noise issue, as well as the ANC issues (usually they come together). I am literally at the 5th replacement right now.

If they are more likely to succeed again, it’s because they either already have money or have easy access to capital. It’s somewhat common knowledge that investors will invest in the same people again, sometimes even after failures.
