Like many developers, I use AI to help me debug errors in production. I still run into huge log files that don't fit into the now large context windows of foundation models. I found myself going through those files to find the most relevant information and hand crafting what to paste in when asking the model what went wrong. Even new tools like Roo Code often error out and simplify too much when running their condenser tools. I created this to see if others find this tool useful and looking for feedback how to improve it.

Libertarian leaning myself, sad to say, this is the first time I am now in full realization that monopolies do in fact exist and are very dangerous. Platforms like Youtube are beyond ubiquitous and we all depend on them. The companies behind them have more money than countries. That, combined with the tax free private foundations their founders nearly all have, is taking us down some very bad roads. Of course, those roads are always paved with the best intentions and for our own good. I think it is well past time government step in and limit the power and control mega corporations flex on their platforms and on our public policy in nearly all matters.

Question for any Amazon folks here that may know. Is this akin to something like Atomic or CoreOS that is used within Openshift as the Master or Worker node OS or is this more like the UBI (Universal Base Image) that can be used as the base image of a container via "FROM" within a dockerfile?

I am a solutions architect at Red Hat but I came from being an application architect. I recently gave a talk on cqrs and event sourcing at a midwest user group. I am routinely surprised how few "DevOps" engineers care to grasp application architecture yet want to start dabbling in things like Kubernetes. Automation using Ansible, yes, no problems there. Creating microservice architectures using containers and kubernetes tooling is yet a ways out for many. New tooling is absolutely necessary to implement the things we have all been talking about for at least 10 years. Developers can no longer just care about writing code. They have to think about how to manage breaking up their monolith, not just for performance; that's not typically the driving force behind adopting microservice architectures. It's about improving lead time and reducing the batch size of releases. You can't have microservice architectures without both sides(dev and ops) understanding what each actually do. I have first hand knowledge how difficult it still is to break those silos down. Developers, if you still think writing code is the hard part; well, I've got news for you. Ok, writing good code is still hard but there's a lot more to think about to get the most out of that code when it goes to production. As a starting point to answer "why do any of this?" I recommend the book "Accelerate: The Science of Lean Software and DevOps: Building and Scaling High Performing Technology Organizations".

I opened a service ticket. My ec2 instances have somehow been running for over 950 hours in one month. I can go back and see my instances run for 744 hours (what i'd expect in a month) in previous months. Amazon invented more hours than actually exist in a month for billing purposes. Bezos is a genius! I should have thought of that!

This article says more to me that the author(s) are inexperienced themselves rather than shed any light on the practice of software development. I'm imagining some recent boot camp graduates attempting to conflate their months of programming experience into something more than that. "Hey old dudes in company I just joined, I found some things I think are basic so I'm going to write an article to indirectly shame you in hopes our manager will see how valuable I am already." They know something isn't quite impressive about their older co-workers but this list isn't it and the authors don't even come close to being experienced enough to put a box around it and be thought leaders of any kind.

They’ve burned so many bridges with existing sellers they may be trying to lure in all new unsuspecting would be entrepreneurs that haven’t been given multiple black eyes by them already. “Hey look, amazon was really a gentleman, maybe I should go out on a date too”

Ha, I see others have written great responses to this already. I have heard not all children are difficult. I personally can't imagine such a thing, but I have one of those "spirited" children. Do you have toddlers too or just the infant? I have a 3 year old at home and I work from home 2 days a week. It was fine when he was an infant but now I have to work either from Whole Foods or the library. It is challenging. I can't just get up and go to the bathroom and leave my stuff. If I try to work from home my 3 year old son demands my attention. I am desperate for a secure place to work from. I was hoping Lifetime Fitness would put one of their new co-work offices in my location but that may be a long time out. I'm just curious if you have plans for when your infant gets older. Maybe I am doing it wrong but there is 0 chance to work when I am in the house with him.

I don't think people understand just how quickly the liver, kidneys, hormone levels, your whole body can be destroyed in the blink of an eye by bad drugs. I would say, I've seen more than a few HN contributors have a less than cautious attitude toward recreational drugs. Drugs, period, without proper knowledge and guidance can do irreparable harm to internal organs and should be treated with proper respect.

What "toxicness"? I don't see any in this comments section? Did HN delete most of it or did the community down vote those entries into oblivion? Due to a few comments in here I did some digging on the compensation they calculate publicly. Honestly, I can actually see why they are getting negative feedback from it. Paying people 221k in San Fran for the same job they would pay max 102k for in Minnesota, regardless of the city, seems quite unfair. Minneapolis is actually quite expensive. Why not pay for the value a developer provides independent of location? Plus, if someone moves to a less expensive location, they lower the pay. Looking at all their compensation rules, I would never feel secure about knowing how much I might be paid month to month. It seems they can make new rules as they go along. Might they want to reduce my pay if my average monthly grocery bill goes down after learning to cook?

I run into examples almost daily where I need a mac. The latest being the cognita/angular example from awslabs https://github.com/awslabs/aws-cognito-angular2-quickstart. States right in the instructions you need to run the createresources.sh on either linux or mac. Even running babun or cygwin on windows doesn't work. I tried and wasted quite a lot of time. I ran it on my mac pro and it just works. It's not that mac is inherently better, its that the vast majority of developers work on macs and don't bother to get their workflows to work on windows.

Apple seems to be the only tech giant adhering to "do no evil." I've been a developer for a long time, even though development workflows are typically more compatible running on Macs, I've resisted going all in working on a Mac. I also have an Android phone. That is going to change. I trust apple a whole lot more than Google or Microsoft. My next phone will be an iPhone and luckily my Mac book pro is already on its way.

If Zuckerberg ran for office he would have to let people know what his politics are and run as GOP, Democrat, Libertarian, etc. That would immediately alienate huge swaths of the population, not just of the U.S., but the world. It wouldn't matter what party he chose. I doubt he would open Facebook up to that kind of scrutiny.

I think it's possible Amazon is not so much shopping for a second HQ as it is looking to move work from the high rent, pro union Seattle area. Only, they saw how much negative press Boeing received after making their true intentions known for moving work to southern states. Amazon is being sneakier. If all works out, long term I imagine much of their high end development work may move from Seattle.

From reading the article, it seems the health benefits may, primarily, be attributed to having lowered blood sugar? I've also seen a number of references saying just eating less has the ability to extend life. So, could it be that sugar, in general, is really really bad for us? If you don't have diabetes, could you get the same benefits Metformin provides simply cutting as much sugar out of your diet as possible? The article reads like a distraction for the masses from the research being done for billionaires to extend their lives. "Hey, don't feel so bad about all the billionaires working on super fancy life extending treatments you can't afford. You can take a cheap little pill to live longer too."
