Wow, refreshing. To me, the most interesting part here is the incentive. It sounds like they ultimately just wanted to rise to the standard once it was made exhaustively clear. The important part here probably being that, by including peers, they know the feedback is coming from the right place, which is disarming.

Taken in light of the existence of the glymphatic system, a robust mechanism of clearance activated by slow wave sleep, what is more likely... misfolded protein accumulation is incidental to the loss of sleep during the course of fatal familial insomnia or loss of sleep is incidental to what is actually a disease of misfolded proteins?

I appreciate your comment, despite not relating to it very well and it seeming a bit strange to me.

I know that might come across a bit odd, but it's refreshing to actually try to understand other viewpoints and to do so inoffensively.

Interestingly, the legacy of Biosphere 2 includes the recently emerging fasting and fasting-mimicking science demonstrating some interesting healthspan promoting properties. Dr. Roy Walford of Biosphere 2 helped kick off the caloric restriction field thanks to his experiences.

Valter Longo explains that his tenure in Walford's lab as one of the preludes to some of his great work demonstrating that some of the benefits of CR are achievable by using discrete periods of fasting as opposed to long-term restriction, which has obvious challenges of practicality and undesirable effects like emaciation just to name a few.

He talks about Dr. Walford's time in biosphere 2 and how it impacted both Walford's work and, ultimately, his own.

This was based on the SELECT trial data, which means that it could just as easily be measuring the effects of a very large and prolonged dose of 400 IU of alpha-tocopherol as it is omega-3. Greater than 12x RDA.

Moreover, it's been many years since this was published. If prostate cancer-promoting effects were so plainly an obvious effect of marine omega-3 supplementation, you'd expect to have seen it abundantly replicated by now.

Some research is adopting this pattern too. A great example is Dr. Satchin Panda's clinical trial on time-restricted eating. You self-select an eating window and then document it through the app. Pretty cool stuff. mycircadianclock.org

It might be written better as, "Cardiometabolic resilience may be neurobiological." Of course, mental resilience being neurobiological would be a banality, however, they are talking about the strength of a specific brain network breaking down an association between poorer cardiometabolic health and neighborhood violence. Definitely a little more interesting, that.

Interesting journalistic experiment, however, ads like these are irrelevant unless they can push the amount of exposure that shifts elections. That's going to take a lot of money. The question, then, becomes not whether they can get ads approved, but whether they stay approved even as dollars are poured in.

A more expensive experiment to run, in that case.

6:30AM is just some other city's 11:30AM... the difference in between is just light exposure, food consumption, and activity (the three big zeitgebers).

Unless you think you'd never resynchronize after moving across the world, it's pretty obvious that your wake and sleep time would have to be a lot more malleable than you suggest.

It really sounds like a software issue to me. If the watch is causing atrial fibrillation to be detected too often, then you can either make the software meet some greater threshold before alerting the user.. or, even better, determine more fully formed diagnostic criteria to be applied.

The fact that medicine hasn't studied whether or not healthy hearts are regularly doing this because sensors were inconvenient previously, doesn't mean we need to get rid of the sensors. It means that both the presentation of the software should have some sort of feedback loop from clinical research that should emerge as a consequence of that data now... existing.

Valter Longo's work has shown that fasting causes a destruction of immune cells that get renewed from progenitors (absent the autoimmunity) after the refeeding phase. The mechanism has been shown to help with an animal model of multiple sclerosis called experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

It's a very elegant, most likely conserved mechanism that may generalize to virtually all diseases of autoimmunity and not just multiple sclerosis. However, that obviously needs to be proven clinically before you can say that and it might take a while.

Also, the conversion of animal research to human has another challenge: rodents have a faster metabolism. To have any hope of recapitulating those type of effects, you really have to go a while without food.

There seems to be a more medically safe way of probably tapping into mostly identical effects though, which is a "fasting-mimicking diet." Ultra low calorie, fits a specific macronutrient profile.

Very interesting to hear your successes in light of the immune cell turnover effect that prolonged fasting seems to have (Valter Longo's research).
