I think that it's hard to determine people's desires from voting habits. Voting is kind of a game, wouldn't you say? It's got teams and everything, almost like a spectator sport.

I spent a few years doing indie game development, and one of this biggest lessons that stuck with me was how to think about a product as an experience. To me, game design was mostly that, but focused on making the experience fun, I guess. A huge amount of time and effort went into thinking about what the end user's experience would be like. By instinct, I tend to lean on thinking about the "player's" experience.

I definitely buy this. I've blogged about personal projects, and writing out plans for a project tends to take some wind out of its sails. It's motivating to share progress, though.

Software engineering is broad and deep. If you want to explore, go explore. You may make less money, but you may make more. You may like something else less, but you may like it more. I think it’s up to you!

That said, I never stayed put very long in any particular programming job. Embedded systems were fun, but I was curious to learn about the cloud, so I went to Salesforce. YMMV

Shopping isn't just about the products themselves. It's also about the experience of shopping, wouldn't you say? If I had to choose between cheap + bad shopping experience and cheap + nice shopping experience, the latter would be a no-brainer!

I think it's more about age. It's fun to ask people a question like, "What was your golden age for gaming?" That said, I really miss LAN parties and static multiplayer game servers-- we've got the same "golden age" :)

There's more to life than achievements. An experience, however unreal it may be, is valuable to the person experiencing it, regardless of whether or not anything is achieved outside of the experience itself. It's only escapism if it's a problem. My 2 cents.

I didn't interpret the GP post to mean ego in a toxic way. I certainly put stickers on my laptop to express myself by sharing a bit of my interests and identity.

I think that this is an excellent insight.

Explicit leadership roles also inevitably result in situations like, "well, they were the best person we had at the time" whereby a very unsuitable leader is kept in power. The worst orgs I've participated in have suffered from this kind of problem.

A pair of high quality earplugs can do wonders, though I only know this because I had a coworker that swore by them. I prefer in-ear headphones and music, personally.

Fair, but many developers are intimately aware of the shape of that kind of XML. Ever tried making sense of an XML document that tries to express something as complex as a web page, but without the requisite domain knowledge? It's painful.

Slightly less so as a JSON document, IMHO.
