The whole premise of interviewing and opening to the pool of candidates is to evaluate and give every applicant a fair chance after passing a minimum bar. If the whole point was to favor or employ someone (pre-decided or friend), then why this facade?

Nice advice! One finds 2 paths I guess- to focus on the medium (code, framework, etc) or on the results for a MVP.. once the MVP gets enough traction, then even rewriting the whole app is not bad as long as we know the idea has potential.

to each his own, but what okcupid might be aiming at is something similar to comments-->leading to blog posts (if I strike a chord with your concise comment at HN, I would be more inclined to check your profile and follow links to say your blog etc and read more.. similarly for dating sites). this is like the trailer->movie effect which is an effect of short attention span and saves time.

"out in the wild" approach- I had native friends who were more than willing to help me, by correcting my mistakes, and ofcourse making fun of it as well.. and referring to a book whose lines I would use in everyday activities, like buying groceries, normal chitchat during commutes, etc..

also, this might sound weird, but I sometimes forced myself to "think" in the language I was learning.. this was a good practice as it made me more articulate by mapping words to mental images

It might be a nice idea if you had some kind of ranking with things that are most talked about on the top.. got the thought from tweetdeck which shows wordclouds with largest words being the ones most talked about, to see the trend

there is something so enchanting reading about github, 37signals, etc.. they are filled with passion, do not talk about money (as an objective) and most of all inspire others to follow their heart and pursue their love

I recently (<1 month) switched to Mac from Debian. As others have suggested, the initial comfort period might be lil difficult to cope with, but it wont feel like a curve. Things are pretty the same (Eclipse, dir structure, shell etc.), but I havent regretted the "change" yet.. plus the community is good, with nice treatment for apps as in Ubuntu..
