Great movie.

Assuming that data is basically a tool for doing PsyOps, it certainly puts the social networks operated by for example Chinese companies in a different light. That would mean total control.

Could you imagine if the Silicon Valley companies were obligated to share their data troves with the American government?

I understand now why every little shithole in China (e.g. my parents in law's small village) have better Internet fiber connections than I will ever have in Scandiavia.

Negative thoughts detected! Your comment is now being run through a text pattern recognizer to tie it up with your Facebook and your email account. God forbid you might have a stray creative thought somewhere ever, that may threaten our precious democracies.

Have a nice life.

If it works, it works. I remember standing at the base of the new Tencent double tower, when it was being constructed. They were almost done with the concrete skeleton and the beams looked all crooked standing there looking up at the structure - each column on each floor was slightly misplaced compared to the previous one. I am no construction engineer, but I believe they should have been placed in a straight line, but maybe I am wrong..

How, if ever, you felt the lack of information freedom?

Never really thought about it except those times I forgot to pay my VPN

Is it so polluted as it looks?

Cleaner than my home town in Scandinavia. Was living in South part of China.

I understood it as if they used GSuite as well. How would 200 independent Google accounts be shut down, if one of them violated the terms. That sounds like an even bigger problem then..

That might be my fault. I worked on the tcpip and sms protocol stacks for the 55 and 65 series Siemens phones..

Sorry..

I know of at least one small Easter egg if anyone has a S65 lying around somewhere. I don’t believe it was discovered by anyone before. Might also work on the 55 devices - don’t quite remember as it was a long time ago.

Actually the reply to the ping originates from the network itself and not the phone and it would work with any class of SMS - you just need to set the “delivery receipt” bit in the SMS. Then the network will send a receipt to the sender when the message has been delivered.

Ask HN: Which VPN? 8 years ago

Don’t use strongVPN. They shared my info. Got a letter from some Hollywood lawyers after someone had been running a torrent download over my VPN (would share my WiFi on and off from my phone with visiting colleagues, if they had trouble with our corporate VPN and someone probably had a movie torrent download or seed running in the background by mistake).

Binary PDUs can be tricky to send between operators - especially when those operators are in different countries. Often you will find that the PDU messages simply disappear. Internally within an operator network there shouldn’t be any problem usually.

That is probably why twilio doesn’t support it.
