In America rent and healthcare are two big expenses that you can't escape from. You could live in rural areas and then you don't have a job or you do but you're spending most of your income on car expenses.

I haven't done standup in 6 months and I just feel generally better. Where I work you just report to the tech lead every 2 or 3 weeks. So much nicer than daily standups. Could you imagine other professions doing what we do?

I went from being the most anxious, scattered mind person in the room to the most calm and focused. I went all in - 4 hours a day for over a year. But it's made a huge difference. It's given me many insights into life - one of which is that you ultimately choose whether you want to be happy in life.

You said there's no way to rationalize it, but it depends on the person. For some becoming more mindful allows you to see bad mental habits that may contribute to the anxiety. Once you are mindful of these you are empowered to change them.

I'd argue it's not even how good you are but how good you negotiate. If you negotiate well transparency is not in your interest.

It's interesting to me that fear (even paranoia) was useful for our species for a long time. But now in modern society it actually is used against us.

Any UI that is not honest with users is a bad thing. I use this service and I know that my original is no longer there when I allow Google to delete my local files but maybe i'm the exception. I will add that it depends on your perspective as to how you see this. You can look at how easy Google makes it to take photos on your phone and then have them all backed up and available with a click of a button. And in addition you can look at how hard it used to be to do anything like that (my grandparents never had photos when they lived in Italy because the town they lived in didn't have any photographers). If you see it through that lens then it's awesome.

As more data is indexed the system "learns" what makes a relevant search based upon the words in each document. Though I agree the definition of learning in a machine learning context is kind of grey.

Why Lisp? 11 years ago

It would help if I saw a real world problem and how you can solve it Lisp and not in say Python.

Another good question: Why are S&P500 stock dividends so low? The average S&P500 stock dividend yield is like 2%. In theory, you buy stocks to receive earnings. But if companies only give out a fraction of those earnings, you as an investor are not really getting much. So how can companies get away with a 2% dividend yield?
