Again, the plural of anecdote is not data, but I've felt much better since going vegan. I'm willing to grant that may be a placebo effect, but my acne seems to also have improved a bit as well.

The China Study is supposed to have taken a more comprehensive view. I've not read any criticism of it (which is why I asked for some). But he cites more than one study that demonstrated the ability to "turn on and off" cancer growth in rats exposed to a particular carcinogen by raising and lowering their animal protein intake. That seems like pretty damning evidence against that particular protein.

(Edit: Assuming of course, said studies are accurately being described to me. I haven't read the actual data.)

I've read McDougall, it's what started me on veganism after 20 years of vegetarianism. And I have a copy of the book you mentioned.

He explicitly takes the time to discuss correlation vs causation. But thanks! I'll take a look.

I know this is slightly off topic and I apologize but I'm rather obsessed with the topic at the moment.

First, vegan isn't a necessarily a moral choice. I'm vegan and my primary reason for being so is for one animal: me.

Second, the China Study shows overwhelming evidence that animal-based foods are terrible for you. I'm no expert in the field of nutrition but it seems to me the paleo diet falls straight into the animal food based diet category and therefore into the greatly increases your risk of multiple kinds of diseases category.

(If anyone knows of any real criticism of the China Study, I'd like to read it. All I can find boils down to "I like me therefore it's good for me")

I think I just don't understand a growing population on HN. Since when is programming about building websites? Or desktop apps? Or making money? What happened to ars gratia artis?

The people who would say that are the people who already do.

This is probably the only chapter of that book I really enjoyed. It mostly felt like an "I'm so awesome" series of events. But this was a really valuable chapter. If you feel burned out on something you loved it can be hard to figure out what made you love it. Hacking CRUD apps for 8 hours a day for weeks, months, years can be seriously depressing. CRUD just isn't that interesting, but it is what a lot of programming jobs involve.

I'm really rediscovering the joy of programming by teaching intro programming classes at the local community college. To some extent it's let me relive the first time I realized I could make the computer do what I wanted, not what someone else said I was allowed to.

I'm curious, what is it that your friend doesn't like?

I see the argument that $9.99 is a bad price point for publishers but is there any real evidence that this price is too low to sustain profits for a publisher? I mean... 10 bucks doesn't seem very low to me. It seems... reasonable for a book. Especially given that there is no cost for storage or printing of ebooks.

I despise it when people call me a "techie". Pushes my buttons like few other things. Seriously? Yeah, I'm the "techie" and you're the "widdle manager-wanager"

It's really the politeness that is key. It's the difference between "You suck" and "Your X could be improved by Y" Sadly the tubes are clogged with the former and the latter is much less common. I wonder how many of us really remember learning to program and all the "stupid" questions we asked. Or installing that "Linux thing" the first time, or whatever. As we get farther away from that point it can be harder to remember just what it was like.

Actually, that isn't what the parent said, and I'm not arguing with the parent. I'm making a point that cursing only maintains it's visceral power when used sparingly, which I don't think it really is in this video or in some recent articles.

The problem I have with this is nicely illustrated by a (possibly apocryphal) story about John Steinbeck. He wrote to a college paper that was printing an entire page of the word "FUCK" He asked them to stop, not because it was offensive, but because it was devaluing the word. Swearing only serves to get a strong emotional reaction when it's uncommon.

It's also loud as hell. Bad idea to post a video with out a way to adjust the volume. Nearly blew my head off.

Oye, no joke. I get more mail for former residents of my home than I do for me. We have filled out the form to stop delivering that mail. Didn't work. We have called the mail annex the carriers leave from. Didn't work. We have left the carriers a friggin note. Didn't work. Also, my sister-in-law just sent us something she made for my daughter, which USPS promptly lost and did nothing to attempt to find. Granted she didn't add delivery confirmation on the package, but should I really have to pay extra to make sure my package will actually get there? If that is the case, raise the price of stamps to cover it.

What do you think of the note taking on the Kindle? I've never been one to write in books so It's hard for me to say how well it works.

It would be nice to know how the RSS works, and maybe have a way to select articles over a certain threshold via RSS. I use Calibre to fetch HN articles but when i see them through out the day, I can't be sure if I'll get that one later or not.

Some of these are free because they are public domain, like The Prince. Not sure what's up with the others. I've only had a kindle for a few days but it's been my experience so far, that if a book is free and not public domain, there is a reason: no one would ever buy it.

Oye. Let's not start the "X Most Y of 2011" stuff. Every year we are bombarded by these badly written articles. Can we just skip this nonsense this year?
