Github's major closed-source Copilot extension reenables itself if you try to tone down the aggressiveness of its suggestions. Some malware / reverse-useless-machine vibes.

A lot of us are sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop with respect to Microsoft's commitment to openness, so this seem kinda foreboding.

The article didn't focus too much on solutions, though a couple of things were mentioned: 1. Reducing patent protection 2. Price controls (?)

So let's assume we want these companies to reduce their profit margins (and instead lower drug prices or spend more on R&D.) What _are_ the best policy tools to incentivize this while minimizing market distortions, etc?

This was/is exactly the business model of SolarCity and a lot of residential solar. The more general concept, sometimes called "Savings as a Service" or "Efficiency as a Service", is pretty ubiquitous in the energy space.

This appears to be a human interest piece (specifically a local Welsh one) rather than science journalism. A quick check of the Wikipedia page for "Asteroid impact avoidance" indicates that this is a well-established and well-funded field, and that the lone hero narrative is for effect only.

It would have been interesting to know what people inside the field think - is it like some areas of astronomy where having lots of amateur eyes on the problem is key? Or is this guy sort of a crank?

This is salient too though:

The new Java-based implementation has improved performance significantly, and made Storm's internal APIs more maintainable and extensible.

It's not totally clear if this is because it's been rewritten Java, but the intrinsic qualities of the language do matter; there are real tradeoffs between maintainability and dynamism/flexibility. I feel like this sometimes gets shortchanged in these narratives.

Yeah, not a great article and doesn't seem concerned with the "why."

A couple of possible explanations:

1. There are beneficial effects other than tax revenue - maybe these municipalities are hoping the new data centers will help turn them into hubs - draw other businesses, talented workers, etc.

2. The decision-makers' incentives aren't well-aligned with those of the municipality. Maybe the local business owners who fund their campaigns benefit disproportionately from these big projects. Maybe the headline of "brought Apple to North Carolina" outweighs the actual, harmful effects of the deal they signed when the next election comes around, etc.

The author's point that functional programming principles are important to systems programming and should be taught alongside it is well taken. I think he confuses the issue somewhat with all the discussion of what is a "systems programming language" as these days it's just used to refer to languages substitutable for C.
