There's serious room for improvement in the salary calculator, calculator to account for growing metro areas, and I think most of this comes from trying to rely on numbeo for your rent indexes. Eg. Why in the world doesn't Portland OR have its own rent index vs rest of OR? The 'Hot Markets' adjustment should also take a wider account for cities / towns / suburbs that are probably also booming. For example, I'm in the PDX metro area, but on the WA side of the river. My housing costs have gone up 41% to 2.5 years thanks to the booming housing market here, but the current gitlab calculation doesn't account for it thanks to the combined factor of being in the metro area but not in the right city/state, combined with the fact that the big growing metro area doesn't have it's own rent index. Of course, this could be smoothed over and fixed as part of the hiring process, but it would be nice to know up front that you were using up to date data in your attempts to pay market rate salaries.

I think in the past 5 years there's been a ton of realization from non SF/NYC/VC-tech companies in the fact that they are competing from the same pool of talent and thus have to offer competitive salaries on a national basis, not just competitive for their area/city. There is still a ton of progress to be made in this regard, but it is changing. for example, a hypothetical newly graduated programmer with some skills and experience should be able to land a starting position for at least ~$80k+. companies that would have previously been trying to pay ~$40k in their area are now realizing that by offering a competitive dollar amount, the actual cost of living makes their offer the most compelling one. Whereas before, they'd offer the $40k and say, well, our offer is lower because it's cheaper to live here. The right attitude is matching the ballpark competition in dollar amounts, and saying, you should accept our offer because your money goes further here.

My guess is that the approved tool the company allows to merely build a profile of the additional details necessary to provide additional 'white glove' style service to VIPs to ensure positive word of mouth occurs. Then they realized that they were seeing data that indicated that they were being watched a little closer by the .gov, and 'adjusted' the software to reject or process those people's Uber experiences differently.

Right now I'm waiting for a GCC related fix in WSL that is scheduled to get pushed in April. In the meantime I've spun up Ubuntu in VirtualBox that gets the job done. This looks like a great option to play around with once that GCC fix is pushed

Facebook doesn't properly identify me vs my brother, so they still have some things to work one.

They plan to deorbit after ~5-7 years, will replace with better, newer tech sats. It hasn't been done because the launch capacity and costs to date hasn't allowed for it. These will be launched via FH or BFR, which will be able to launch up many, many more at a time compared to the current F9.

FWIW, I think the comparison is fair if you swap out CA for the insanity of housing prices in the bay area. I do think that the brutal winters of Idaho should be accounted for though. If you're trying to convince people to move to Idaho, you might need to pay a little closer to sunshine salaries to make up for negative degree weather.

It's easier to get hired at an early stage startup because there are fewer hoops to jump through. You can then use that startup to build industry connections and get your next job via inside track referral through someone you know at a bigger / more established company.

I'm going to concede on the particulars of how low the price was because it must have been just a killer loss leader in-store sale at walmart - the cheapest I can find now online is ~$7 for the same flat of 35 17oz bottles.

I am, however, going to disagree with how much water. 2 gallons of water for a single person each day seems to be more than just excessive for drinking water. Even if I was drinking 17oz each primary meal and another upon waking and upon going to sleep, that still leaves 171 oz remaining to reach 2 gallons.

The reason is that you can buy a case of clean bottled water for ~$1-2, providing you clean, good tasting drinking water for a month. This is something even people at or below poverty level income can afford and dramatically increases quality of life.

The individual has little to no control over the water or pipes that runs the water to their home. It is a take it or leave it situation. If you own your home, then you might be able to install a water filtration system. This might be at the very least $200+. Okay. That doesn't compete with the price of bottled water. What about just a water filter pitcher? $30+. Well, now that's far more reasonable, but still represents 20-30 cases of water.

Bottled water IS the cheap, easy option. Should people fight and vote for infrastructure improvements so that they have clean, good tasting water? absolutely. But while we're working on that, we'll drink bottled water.
