I'm working on a photo-sharing service for groups to replace shared Google Drive folders. Even if a Google Drive is publicly editable uploads count against the uploader's quota unless they select all, right click, change owner to the folder owner which is a bridge too far.

By default anyone can upload to a gallery but they are identified by hard-to-guess UUIDs. This makes passing galleries around SMS or any chat platform very easy but one thing I did not expect is groups forming long-lived persistent galleries. Once you have more than one or two of these they become hard to keep track of.

I am currently working on an app with optional accounts for end users to (1) keep track of multiple galleries (2) allow iPhone live photo uploading (no way to do that within Safari) and (3) allow iPhones to upload pictures with metadata which Apple strips from all Safari uploads.

He made the point that any rock you find out there lying on top of the ice is probably a meteorite and there are scientists out searching for meteorites that have collected in water channels formed from melting ice in the warmer seasons.

A photo sharing website for high-trust groups. Only the album creator needs an account, then they can share a hard-to-guess link with the group members allowing them to upload photos. Anyone with the link can upload and download. Before this the best solution my groups had found was a shared Google Drive folder.

A band rehearsal recording management website. Uses much of the same code as the previous. Suggests the canonical names for songs based on the file names. Songs can be searched by name, date, or tag (any arbitrary value). This replaces a shared google drive folder with subfolders by recording date (great to find the most recent run through a of songs, bad to find the best run through of any given song)

This has been a problem with NYC's bike share program, CitiBike. The solution was to add an alert when your phone's location is far from the location of the bicycle you are trying to unlock.

I have spent lots of time fiddling with OpenVPN and Wireguard configurations. On a whim I tried out Tailscale and literally within 10 minutes I was up and running, it totally blew my mind.

Not a paid shill and I don't even use it that much but when I do I can count on it to work (which is a level of faith I never had in my own OpenVPN configs).

I've had some luck by scribbling on the first page of every new notebook. Subconsciously it is now "ruined" and safe for every day use.

This is a nice visualization and would be nice to see similar diagrams for other technical solutions.

I've been experimenting with a static-site generator for the photography half of my website trying to make the process of getting the photos off my camera and laid out in a cohesive form easier. I've tried to minimize my use of Javascript and lean on modern HTML features to keep my images high quality but fast loading (Primarily by using <srcset> instead of <img>)

The photos of negatives with holes punched in them trigger flares of anger in me, especially where the puncher has seemed to purposefully hole-punched the face of a subject.

Note that despite the similar price points and form factors they serve two different purposes.

The Raspberry Pi is a full computer shrunk down and made (relatively) cheaply.

The Arduino is a cheap microcontroller made large for convenience. Things like on-board voltage regulation and USB make prototyping much easier. But these conveniences cost money and make the total cost (relatively) expensive. A professional might (keyword: might, don't come at me professional hardware designers!) use an Arduino board for creating a prototype and then design fully a custom product based on what they learned.

You wouldn't (in 2021) try to build a computer around the microcontroller in the Arduino because it's so underpowered but you might use it for a smart, cheap motion sensor with a long battery life.

This is great for situations where your Raspberry Pi doesn't have any other internet access. But if you do have and ethernet drop or Wi-Fi you can also use your carrier's email to SMS gateway!

For my personal website I use a custom static site generator and rsync
