In the past it used to work the way the parent comment is describing. The confusion is understandable. Apple basically got rid of macos and replaced most of it with things from ios in 2020, a lot changed.

True, although the i2c controller that the dimms are connected to is an entirely separate device from the i2c controller in the gpu that's connected to the display ports. As long as you know what you're doing the risk is not significant.
Fun tip: the same process works to modify the edid stored on a typical monitor or laptop screen. Sometimes you can even change various settings on the tcon by writing to other i2c addresses. You also don't need a raspberry pi, any computer works.

You can't even turn on and use a new apple product unless you phone home and ask apple for permission. I'm not sure why this is newsworthy. Apple products are known to phone home more than just about anything else. It would be more surprising if apple photos didn't phone home.

TOTP is not really something that would be sent to your email. The entire point of TOTP is that you can generate the auth code yourself, from the current time and a pre-shared secret.

I don't see anything wrong with that at all. They've created a branding term that allows consumers to get an idea of the sort of pixel density they can expect without having to actually check, should they not want to bother.
That's very surprising that the image from the firmware update alone is sufficient to boot the machine. On the overwhelming majority of laptops, the update capsules don't contain the NVRAM sections (so no set or default values for any settings) and typically this is enough to prevent the firmware from booting the machine.
It's also interesting/impressive how much work the author went through to reinvent the wheel with his own custom microcontroller setup for reading and flashing the EEPROM when there are so many cheap off the shelf solutions available (that can read and program hundreds of times faster than it sounds like his did).
If you didn't pay upwards of $20 per piece, they were likely fakes. I have had the same experience as all the other commenters here: Pomona clips are the only ones I've found that actually work well, while all the cheap clips are just about unusably bad.
