I went down the rabbithole, and as far as I can tell, you have to axiomatically assume infinities are real in order to prove Goodstein’s theorem.

I challenge the existence of ordinal numbers in the first place. I’m calling into question the axioms that conjure up these ordinal numbers out of (what I consider sketchy) logic.

But it was a really fun rabbithole to get into, and I do appreciate the elegance of the Goodstein’s theorem proof. It was a little mind bending.

I haven't studied math beyond what was needed for my engineering courses.

However, I also am starting to believe that infinity doesn't exist.

Or more specifically, I want to argue that infinity is not a number, it is a process. When you say {1, 2, 3, ... } the "..." represents a process of extending the set without a halting condition.

There is no infinity at the end of a number line. There is a process that says how to extend that number line ever further.

There is no infinity'th prime number. There is a process by which you can show that a bigger primer number must always exist.

Why use OpenBSD? 8 months ago

Long time OpenBSD fan. Used it as my daily driver for years before standardizing all computers at home to macOS. I still think about going back to openBSD one day, but it's no longer very practical as a daily driver.

I want to use OpenBSD for the next project I'm building. However, I can't wrap my head around the old way of doing deployments (before containers). People who've built production grade systems with OpenBSD:

1. How do you deploy software? 2. How do you manage fleets of servers? 3. How do you spin up/turn down servers from cloud providers? (I only know of Vultr who provided an OpenBSD option out of the box).

I ended up having a work laptop that looks exactly like my personal laptop. After making an embarrassing mistake once, I picked up some stickers and stuck them on my office laptop.

Now, my work laptop looks clearly distinct, not just from my own personal laptop, but also from all the identical laptops other people at work bring to meeting rooms.

Yay! A tiny minuscule bit of my code is riding on these. While I no longer work there, I am absolutely thrilled at this milestone

2. I absolutely recommend Zoox as a great place to work. Believes me, I’ve sampled many jobs, Zoox is up there with Google in terms of what the experience feels like in my experience.

So pornhub needs to see how many terabytes of content they host and use AI to generate 2x more terabytes of cat pictures and add them to a compliance tab on their home page now?

Seems annoying but not impossible to do.

I must say their 3-way merge tool is the best free software on Windows the only competing one, but less good, is p4merge, and it's closed source.

A long time ago, I used Araxis Merge[1] and I can strongly recommend it[2]. It was specifically better than both tortoise git and p4merge, after having used both of those options personally.

I use OpenBSD. I love it, but I recommend reading warnings on the label.

I would say FreeBSD is somewhat like Ubuntu is to Linux - easy to get setup, works for more people.

There isn’t anything like OpenBSD in the Linux world - where the primary focus is system correctness, even at the cost of user convenience at times.

This looks stupid.

If I am reading the legislation [0] correctly, teenagers now have to tell Spotify what song to play one after another, every single time one track ends. Unless someone has previously made a playlist (I think) - in which case you can only listen to playlists that you or (someone else has made) if you are a teenager.

I'm surprised that the music industry let this happen to them.

I’m curious - what is the motivation for the “offline only” requirement? Where are the boundaries of what’s negotiable and what’s not? For example, is it ok if it can connect to the internet but doesn’t? Or is the existence of a TCP/IP stack or a wifi chip a dealbreaker? How about a 1 time software update on first boot? etc

This looks gorgeous.

Here is my wishlist for my ideal watch:

1. Automatically adjusts to the timezone I'm in, including accounting for daylight saving time

2. Analog watch face with zero visible electronic displays

3. Connects to google calendar and has a haptic signal when something is about to start or end on my calendar

4. 2 hours of charging lasts for 1 year

5. Precise enough to act as a PTP grandmaster source.

I have been using a similar service from a different provider (feedbin) and can vouch for the usefulness of this approach.

For a time, I used Android. The absence of a decent RSS reader on android made me jump back to iOS. My smartphone OS choice came down to being able to read newsletters as feeds.

You make the policy and then hand out exceptions (quietly) to the MVP's.

This right here is exactly the kind of manipulation that's causing my generation to quit corpo jobs in record numbers.

It's BS and everyone knows it. Those quiet exceptions aren't as quiet as you would believe. We all see it. And we all understand what's happening.

Naval Ravikant was right. It's best to play long term games with long term people and have zero tolerance for anything less than 100% integrity.

This is mostly a note to myself.

It's interesting to consider "what next" once an OS project reaches this stage. There are soo many directions a team can take, but also, none of those direction lead to a clear path towards massive user adoption.

There are obvious holes/gaps in what mainstream OSes offer today, however it is not clear how a project goes from here to addressing those gaps, and even if those were to be addressed, it is not clear how it could displace mainstream OSes.

We are clearly better off having projects like this, that give us options in case something were to go horribly wrong with mainstream OSes. However, what is the incentive to keep projects like this alive when the path ahead is soo unclear?

How does one disrupt the operating systems market?

I have found that one common element in the things I want to build or fix is that I am opinionated about that thing. I am going to claim that having opinions is a prerequisite to being motivated to shape the world to suit my opinions a little better.

If I think about everything that I don't have an opinion about, it's things that I don't understand very well. For example, car washes. I do not care what a car wash tunnel has, if it is brushless or not, if it uses some fancy shampoo or not - I have zero opinions. I can never find motivation to want to go redesign it, fix it or develop software for it.

But something like Github's pull request review? Oh boy. It's absolutely insane that you can not comment on an unchanged line in a file you are reviewing. If someone changes a function call 3 out of 4 places, and you want to leave a comment on that unchanged line of code saying "Hey, you forgot to change this too" - guess what? You can't. In my opinion, this is insanely moronic. An opinion like this can easily motivate one to want to go fix a thing or build a thing. (I don't want to solve this problem for other reasons, but that's unrelated to this discussion).

How do you form opinions? I don't know, but my guess is that listening to opinionated people with good taste really helps. Dan Norman's book "The Design of everyday things" [0] is one example of a very opinionated work. Bryan Cantrill of Oxide is also often very opinionated on system design, and his podcasts and talks are really fun [1]. When Steve Jobs was talking about just anything, he couldn't help being opinionated af [2]. I love "In praise of Shadows" by Junichiro Tanizaki where he just talks about experiences but you can tell he is deeply opinionated [3].

I don't know how one can develop good taste. Being around art, music, movies, people who obsess over details, people who care, people who expect perfection and accept nothing less - I believe there's some sort of osmosis where you just absorb aspects. I believe surrounding yourself with fantastic art, hiking through majestic trails, chilling with inspiring people - all help reset your acceptance of mediocrity down to 0. I am convinced that this is essential.

Can you show evidence of this strategy working somewhere else?

The best example of this strategy in action would be the US Congress before the 1984 Chevron Deference ruling.

Was Congress more effective back then? One way to check if people got more grandstanding or less grandstanding is to see if there was more bipartisan legislature before 1984 than after.

I'm not a social scientist and one could possibly bring up all sorts of other reasons to justify this as a coincidence or caused by something else entirely or whatnot. I don't have the resources here to put together an entire detailed study to find and untangle confounding factors.

I will only point out that as many things being common as possible (same congressional body, same voter base, same senators) - the time before Chevron deference was dramatically different from the time after Chevron deference, in terms of what Congress felt it should do to earn reelection. It acted accordingly.

When incompetence has more responsibility, the effect of incompetence is amplified.

Correct. This is the desired effect.

Today, Congress hides behind endless procedural votes and dramatic hearings and grandstanding against political opponents and basically doing everything except for useful work.

Now, not only are they on the hook, their incompetence is (hopefully) going to be amplified.

The all-talk-but-no-legislating politicians will, over the next 20 years, get weeded out one by one.

Now Congress is going to have to specify every possible consequence of laws in the statutes, otherwise a judge will decide.

So agencies will not have any power to actually regulate.

This honestly sounds perfect.

If this is the actual end result of this ruling, we’ll all be in a much much better place.

I can not understate how much I agree with parent comment.

The opposite of move fast, build a shitty prototype and iterate is a deliberate problem solving approach undertaken by the highest caliber of engineers. The actual challenges to be addressed are effectively addressed right at the design stage.

The result is a thing of immense beauty and elegance.

I will forever be grateful for the opportunity I had to see this magnificent piece of engineering in action.
