We have a WhatsApp group where we share music recommendations with each other. It's grown quite a bit now and it's gotten hard to keep up. Also new members missed everything that came before. So I set out to solve this problem and have some fun last week.

I decided to write a shell script that does the following: - Parses chat export file and extracts all the Spotify URLs. - Removes duplicates - Authenticates w/ Spotify API - Fetches Ids of tracks already in playlist - Creates a difference list of missing tracks - Adds those to the playlist

And that's that.

Yea, neither could I. Hence the thread. It really does feel like the worlds greatest minds are all just busy trying to find creative ways to sell ads and it's kinda sad.

This is exactly what I was hoping this thread would disprove. But so far I think you're probably right. Private interest just doesn't seem to be seriously willing or able to tackle the big issues.

Thanks for sharing this perspective! I know exactly what you're talking about. I wrote this piece and have to admit that even for me I have days when I struggle to bring this attitude to a problem or a day. I guess it's one of those hard habits to break.

What helps for me the most is intentionality. To literally set my intention for a day or for a problem right before I jump in. So if I know I'm about to jump into a tricky problem I literally take a few seconds to remind myself of the attitude I want to bring and even exactly what I want to focus on.

So this would be things like "Don't try to judge difficulty (easy/hard), just go wherever it takes me" or "Don't be afraid of the amount of work". One that super helpful for me is deliberately separating to "understanding" part of a problem from the "solving" - so i'd tell myself "I'm just trying to understand what's going on right now - solve later". Etc etc.

To be clear, i'm not suggesting you stop thinking about things like "understanding the impact of your work". In fact that's exactly what I think you should be thinking about. That's the "the" type question. It's only when you start to think thoughts like "Am I doing a good job at understanding the impact" that we get away from the goal. "I" am at the center of that question, instead of the "the impact of your work"

So looks like the 80s is when things start going south (increased income inequality) so I looked up who was president during that time, then looked at their wiki page to see their economic policy and found this gem of a quote:

"Soon after taking office, Reagan began implementing sweeping new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed "Reaganomics", advocated tax rate reduction to spur economic growth, economic deregulation, and reduction in government spending."

The more democratic you are as a nation, the more time elected officials spend thinking about ways to improve the lives of ordinary people (not just those in power).

This is not the first time I've seen this ratio but it still blows my mind. It's, of course, unsurprising given that although it's a huge waste of tax payer resources they're a handful of ppl that actually profit lavishly from having this many ppl, who pose no physical threat to society, locked up.

I bet that these ppl will be your biggest obstacles. You should operate with the expectation that they will do everything in their power to protect their intrest. "Saving taxpayers money" literally means "removing it from their bottom line".

That said, I wish you much success! I wish more startups figured out creative ways to align their business models with the real issues affecting society.

Why are we still doing this in 2018! The jury isn't out on this one - the voodoo tricke-down economic experiment is over and the results are in - it is nothing more than a sensationalized way for the rich to piss on the poor. If you don't believe me try this: Go on google.com - type "rich piss on the poor" - the click "I'm feeling lucky". I rest my case lol

A more constructive debate should focus on how to first mitigate, reverse and then prevent.

Of course.. this is the pressure that all public companies face; the pressure to forever increase shareholder value @ whatever cost :-/.. Sad. I wonder if FB is "too big to fail" or if there's a chance that more moves like this might actually hurt the platform?

The only reason this is news in 2017 is because the food and pharma industries have been so successful at suppressing this fact. smh
