After leaving a few of great-on-paper SoCs as paperweights I've learnt that I just don't want to deal with anyone's custom platform as I'll eventually be left with an outdated system that's annoying and time-consuming to maintain.

Not ambiguous really. You know it's <first> (<second/middle>) (<third (rare)>)? (<dad's surname>) (<mom's surname>) and names are typically a single WORD, but may (rarely) have a prefix like De/Della (except for the first name).

Well, this guys mentions they treat "Roberto Antonio" as a single name, and not as a first and second/middle name. I don't see it that way (Spanish, Chile). Here there's a lot of way too common first names (María, José), so most go by both or just he second one, but legally they just have a common first name (and thus, many systems use both names to avoid confusion over mail and email).
I don't know how it'd be a huge advantage in MMOs, but in Ragnarok the bots used a re-implementation of the client and custom servers tested for differences and culling of entities by the original game client to ban bots (as they'd try to interact with entities that should've been culled)

Yup, most don't have the spine to stand up for their moral as they grew up creating low-stake toys. On top of that we have been unable to establish the rigour (proofs, automated-verification, proper design thinking beyond the next 2 quarters) and doing so is really hard and often doesn't have drawbacks comparable to losing speed against teams that just keep throwing stuff at the wall.
I guess if moving through time other than forward like normal it'd justify calling time a new dimension on which you can play on.
Otherwise, we just focus on the 3D space they represent and take time for granted
A lot of transportation is required into cities to deliver food and supplies into supermarkets and then homes. If you improved that you'd have more space and time for fun
I wish cities should design a delivery railroad. I don't want to let food delivery robots take over pedestrian spaces and having standardised package sizes and weight limits would help make things efficient.
Idk, Tech did great during covid and during the RTO some people felt that from everything that changed on the working conditions since things got weird, nothing improved.
At Google the random 2023 layoffs left no guarantee that anything you do mattered. Maybe your salary or mouse click activity was wrong, or maybe your entire org was doomed already and you'd be layed off or moved to Bard (Gemini) and your old team would disappear.
Models might be better today, but the takeaway that persists is the delusion around things being magically faster.

Haven't AMD CPUs been targeting a 95°C limit for 5+ years already? I'd have guessed servers could do 60°C without degrading a whole lot before switching to more power efficient hardware is available.
The MBAs don't care about the long term. Burnt out employees are an externality they can just lay off. Also, since there's a lot of risks in many dimensions, nailing work-life balance, but failing in another aspect will also end your company, so why not make them try their best in the short term while there's some runway left.

I also had no idea what they were talking about, but there's good points about how hardware oblivious and somewhat global is Parquet around metadata.

Eventually you end up with registers that probably allow for 2^N values. But the point is not thinking about the machine executing the instructions, but the construction on top of it that has a safer design.
Seeking performance we've been very prone to avoid abstractions and over and over again have shown why we need the safe abstractions.
I think it was NULL itself. It was a long way until we realised we don't want invalid values and could use the type system to help us use special values safely.
Can't you ssh into them? If so, in emacs you can just open /ssh:host:path/to/file and remotely edit that file.
Even if you didn't have emacs, I don't think you are forced to use VSCode. You could just use sshfs and use any local editor, but I guess other editors also have remote editing plugins
The city is better off having its citizens participate more in the economy and paying taxes through it than staying home or not starting business because rent is too high.
If you wanted to switch to Georgism it seems that you'd need to add that and slowly shift taxes into just being the vacancy taxes.
Switching to Georgism overnight seems way too hard to execute.
Not the same because it does not depend on utilisation. Pretty much everywhere you see property taxes, but vacancy taxes are a lot more recent and I guess rare so far.
This just says that they have too much power and society would be better off having a vacancy tax that aimed to reduce abuse by landlords while at the same time ensuring the city doesn't look like post crisis Detroit, which makes it worse for everyone.
