looks like it's bricked.

on a serious note, i've heard of people doing this to store bought items and then returning them for a refund, is that common?

This happens every day in mexico. Paying the ransom will unfortunately only validate the kidnapping "business model". There's no easy solution.

I think back-of-the-envelope will at least get you within an order of magnitude of the real numbers, which gives you a reasonable range to make assumptions.

it would have to display a lot more ads ... like as you're reading ... maybe video ads w/sound ... and flashing lights while we're at it.

What would be the price tag for the construction of one of these datacenters? Also, how much more expensive (in operating costs) is a, say, 1.1 PUE datacenter compared to a 1.07 PUE?

So things like prototyping, UML, use cases, and Agile were not a "serious attempt" to answer that? I think it's also unwise to tell your manager "it'll be done when it's done."

I'm sorry, but it seems like you're implying that search doesn't need users. Some of Google's ranking depends on analyzing search histories, so if you were the only user, the experience would be worse. That means that search is also about the users. Data center technology can benefit everybody, that's all I'm trying to say.

I believe this problem is another good argument in favor of life extension research. What's going to happen in another 100 or 200 years, when every field has so much knowledge accumulated that it takes an entire lifetime to learn enough to contribute something new?

Could this mean Apple won't be using XServe in their new datacenter? Maybe they're going to use cheap servers like everyone else.
