Yeah, you're mostly right. I mean, these centralized entities could still sign and release instructions over the mesh network propagation (unlikely though).

Having an overall culture/goal of decentralization, can inform decisions on multiple levels/concerns (infra, energy, org). Basically, if I'm trying to be resilient to infra problems, it won't be that much effort in changing the design to also be resilient from centralized control.

FireChat was never going to be resilient enough because it was installed on Apple and Google controlled devices.

This kind of system needs a dedicated or at least 'open' device with adequate hardware to support wireless mesh networks.

I would love to see something like this, because we (even, or rather, especially; Western countries) currently have no decentralized fallback for emergency communication. If the electric grid and cellphone network go... most people don't even have AM radios at this point.

I combined my CSV-To-Map site with ChatGPT to generate an index of potentially interesting maps. Kinda cool to explore various data in the context of geography.

My own project (https://plantogether.city) hopes to help make cities better from an urban planning perspective by enabling two things:

1. Giving people a voice. People don't feel a sense of belonging because they a single individual amongst thousands/millions. Being able to discuss things directly on a map with other citizens is empowering.

2. Serving as a spatial knowledge base. Allows users to collaboratively catalog the best, worst, most interesting etc. parts and elements. For example all items tagged with cycling in Waterloo (https://plantogether.city/tag/cycling?area_id=3).

Having more organized information and discussions could go a long way in improving decision making.

I built https://plantogether.city with Svelte; really enjoyed the lack of boilerplate and the resulting application speed. Has been flexible enough for numerous changes. Nothing really negative to say!

I added a feature which lets you pause the auto skip by holding the progress bar in the bottom right corner. Should give you more time to finish reading.

I also added some contrast to some up UI elements. I do want the prev and next to fade into the picture though.

Thanks for the feedback. I adjusted the auto-timing to be longer. I realized that if someone is a 'speed reader' they will be the user that uses the 'next' button. For the rest, it should give them a little more time.

Unfortunately, not all items have a picture associated with them as that depends whether the associated webpage has an open graph meta tag image.

Making sure items/their pictures looks nice is another thing, which I'll definitely take a look at.

I've always been a big fan of the Snapchat/Instagram Story UI format but I wasn't the biggest fan of the content on those applications. At the same time I wanted a single place where I could get up to speed on various topics. I ended up combining the ideas.

This works exactly as Snapchats 'Discover' Section. There is a collection of 'streams' of various topics (news, gaming, nature, etc.) You click a stream, and you can tap or click to go forward or back. When done the stream viewer closes and the stream link is greyed out until new items are available. It has embedded video and picture support and feels like modern day 'channel surfing'.

In the last year or so I have noticed an increase in Urban Planning and City Design 'consciousness', especially on Hacker News. That is why I am very excited to share Plan Together with you.

Plan Together is a simple website which allows citizens to collaboratively discuss and plan the future of their communities. Users are able to post items to a map, each tagged as a suggestion, news, criticism or praise. Other users can comment on these items; leading to ideas, understanding and unique viewpoints to surface. To better understand how this works, please visit the site.

I am very excited about this project. It is my hope that by empowering users to talk about the world around them it can change their attitude towards their communities. Most people believe their voice and input end with their house or apartment; I want the scope of their belief to include their streets, parks, communities, and cities. As Plan Together grows and municipal officials and planners begin to use the platform's information gathering, community outreach and analysis tools; a new continuous, iterative, relationship-based urban planning paradigm will hopefully emerge.
