I thought one of the really important rules of using format strings was that you never let user input itself enter the format string, e.g. you'd never (shellscript examples) go printf "$input" versus printf "%s" "$input". But security experts are shrugging this off? This is a basic bug that went into production on an OS that millions of people use - any lack of care should be a reputation hit.

8chan if I recall formed because 4chan did away with /pol/ way way back for being too toxic to the rest of the site (it's meant to contain the scum, not breed it). 4chan eventually re-added /pol/, and 8chan, well, you know the rest there.

4chan might've cracked down on the racism, like, a decade ago, in the moot era. Have you been there lately? /pol/ took over and basically homogenized every board.

I was genuinely surprised to learn this in high school (for me, 2017-2021 or so) - not because it's not a notable event in US history but because I was surprised my history teacher was allowed to teach it.

Interesting. I've lost a lot of weight (at my lightest in years) since 2020-01-01, when my New Years' Resolution was to do 16:8 IF. Eventually left the subreddit for it because it seemed like it was goading people into forming eating disorders (which are often competetive, which is why you won't get numbers in this comment) though I kept on it until school re-started in September when I started cheating a little.

IF was probably not what caused me to lose weight. What caused me to lose weight was the mindfulness of my food intake that I developed while intermittently fasting. I significantly cut my caloric intake while remaining moderately physically active and am in much better shape for it (athletic I am not but I am fortunate to be able to walk 3-4hrs a day to and from work and additionally whenever I need groceries etc).

I wouldn't recommend IF to anyone because it can develop into an eating disorder and you are never in as much control as you think. After browsing that subreddit I doubt the odds of dieting successfully (as in, losing weight while maintaining health) are very good.

ffmpeg as a service seems neat... ffmpeg itself isn't super intuitive and beefier files heat my laptop up pretty bad. The only issues would be the usual ones regarding figuring out load distribution between servers, figuring out how to process DMCAs so as to make Disney and others' leeches happy, figuring out how to process requests to snipe illegal content, etc. (issues are plenty, but surmountable).

Bonus points for a FOSS self-hostable site. The thing that keeps me from using other sites is the awful and proprietary JS/etc there. If I have a laptop that can't run ffmpeg very well why am I expected to be able to run Chrome with more than 4GB RAM?

Use proprietary services, get proprietary service. It can't be any surprise, can it? Discord is well known for doing the same.

Sadly though, Mail Privacy Protection isn’t a win-win for all. A lot of content creators today run independent newsletters. Knowing click open rates is a valuable metric to gauge if their work resonates. It also assists in bringing sponsorships and make a living without selling ads. To their dismay, Apple has created a hole in the newsletter business.

It seems to me that hosting and tracking as many 1x1 images as newsletter recipients you have would take a sizeable amount of computer resources. Wouldn't this mean that the playing field is instead, in this respect, now slightly more level between those who have and those who have not?

I have a feeling if this was as simple as you say, distro maintainers would be doing it.

It's dumb to have to change a site's code to be able to read it. But if you know how to, and the font is a big enough problem... so what? Maybe other people like the font choice. It was advice targeted towards its likely viewership.

Anyone know how to delete a suspended Twitter account? I have two (one banned for a joke about threatening people and the other banned for impersonating the state of Ohio - both reasonable and I agree with the bans) but I just want them deleted. No avenues to do so within the site, no support numbers anywhere, emails just go to a bot telling me as a matter of fact my accounts were suspended and will not be unsuspended. Do I have to move to Europe, become a citizen, and file a complaint?

Haha, yeah, I think if they'd go as far to assume all women there (or all women past 30) have kids it would be pretty easy to assume any Doctor is a man.

Also slight nitpick of the title: if(gender == "female" && married && age >= 30) would work just as well. But the use of strings for the gender field is excellent practice! Not only for non-binary gender(s) but also for "unknown" and any other edge cases.

Now that I have fully read the article I think this misses out on due credit though. The arduino cli looks pretty cool and there's no necessity per se to use the IDE 2.0 nor does it seem like there will be in the future. I just wish we weren't so reliant on web technologies to power what should really be native apps and it seems like everything uses electron nowadays.

You misspelled "IRC"

To me the article read like they were trying to justify working at Google to themself. It never explains why it's acceptable that ads target themselves at consumers in the first place when such a thing would have been considered dystopian fifty years ago (selling flower ads on a flower show is okay, but showing flower ads on a car show the next week because the consumer watched a flower show last week could have been the plot of a Twilight Zone episode), instead it just talks about how they're trying to protect privacy while using principally privacy-hostile ad targeting technology.

The issue with all these things is that on right-wing forums these issues are spun from human biodiversity to white nationalism, racial crime statistics to racist rhetoric, concern about pedophilia into homophobia, an obvious lie into support of disproportionately tough policing relative to crimes committed, and, again, racism supportive of police. What is true for alt-right forums that isn't true for others is that hate speech tends to be protected on these private platforms.
