This is a use case we're very excited about. I know longbox.me is using our API as well and is dreading on similar ground.

We get this request a lot and we're evaluating adding it.

If you want a structured, high-level intro to several languages, Bruce Tate's "Seven Languages in Seven Weeks" is pretty good. (http://pragprog.com/book/btlang/seven-languages-in-seven-wee...)

I'd recommend Erlang for its concurrency model (especially comparing how languages like Erlang, Scala, Go and JavaScript/Node handle concurrency and parallelism differently).

Haskell is good for functional concepts - understanding FP will help with functional stuff that is migrating into more mainstream languages.

Learning a Lisp (Common Lisp or Clojure) is good too.

Python is great for the mature community that's developed around scientific projects like machine learning, NLP and such.

I would be curious if Googlers on this list feel that Google does a good job putting these insights into practice.

Six weeks lead-time is not a lot for a presumably major conference like that. If you have a tight travel budget and have to scramble, having that short a lead time may exclude you.

Multiple times a day by email, several calls per month. I don't answer calls from numbers I don't know.

FWIW, 401(k) and pensions are very different things.

I gave a talk once at an agency in Brooklyn. It was rife with dogs. A little shih tzu proudly trotted across the presentation area right before I started speaking.

I get anywhere from 5-20 sales calls a day (not to mention cold emails and the blind-rage-inducing cold meeting spam, which lands the salesperson on my auto-block list). I don't have the time during the day to answer these, so I don't pick up my phone unless I recognize the number. I have my email in my voice mail message - I'm happy to review any email that comes in from a cold call. I may not respond, but often I'll file away a service and if something's a good fit, I'll follow up a bit later.

Quara has been syndicating their content to several outlets. I believe Slate has a number of questions from Quara on their site as well.

This reminds me of some of the tactics suggested by the First Earth Battalion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Earth_Battalion) which was profiled in the book/movie "The Men Who Stare at Goats." The organizers of that suggested that soldiers should parachute into conflict zones carrying baby animals to disarm (figuratively and literally) enemies.

Seriously - there's always some attack vector. I got notified a few months ago that an old static blog on one of my personal sites that I had totally forgotten about was hacked (bad permissions + some feedback form).

Most web hosts have some form of caching available to customers so the concurrency argument doesn't hold up well either.

To the degree to which this is accurate,this flips the cause and effect. Finland, as a society, invests in its teachers and in teaching as a profession. In the US teaching isn't a terrifically paid job and isn't respected as a profession. If we invested more in teachers and teaching then we'd see those ratios start to change, maybe generationally. As it stands, though, teachers tend to get the brunt of the blame for "failing" schools - by both the right and the left politically now.

There's a strong correlation between the number of reviews of movies and box office performance, but not the average rating. Having a bunch of joke reviews, even bad ones, probably does more to raise awareness of products than it does to harm sales.
