I'm sure this site works quite differently from what you say. There's no paid team of moderators flicking stories and comments off the site because management doesn't like them.

There's dang who I've seen edit headlines to match the site rules. Then there's the army of users upvoting and flagging stories, voting (up and down) and flagging comments. If you have some data to backup your sentiments, please do share it - we'd certainly like to evaluate it.

I’ve been using this account on HN since 2010. I created a new HN identity because reasons [1]. Some time after I had reaped a bit of karma, I was replying to someone who was being fairly emotional (and a but irrational) in their arguments. Someone else in the thread flagged their next reply. They thought I did the flagging, looked up the domain that matched the handle, found me on LinkedIn, and complained at me in DMs on LinkedIn. I was freaked out a little.

My sibling comments seem to all want to attribute this foresight to Jobs alone. Jobs had an organization of designers and engineers informing him. Not only informing, but collaborating. He’d express a vision, others would help shape and hone based on existing tech, or based on how they could build new tech, and eventually Jobs would present the vision and solution publicly.

And Jobs would take credit. And the process probably didn’t feel collaborative to the other employees. My point is that Jobs didn’t come up with these things all on his own. Other employees were heavily involved.

Is that the case? It seems like I've heard of cases where probation comes with requirements ("wear this tracking bracelet") that are provided by a private entity who bills the convict, and if the bill isn't paid, probation gets revoked.

I suspect (and I'm talking out of my bum here) that the verbiage is something along the lines of "...and any such sums required to conduct parole or probation...", then the service is outsourced to a private firm, and the private firm simply isn't monitored for due diligence in reporting accurate information to the state.

You do not notarize. Apple does. You submit the app to Apple for them to notarize. Pretty sure you don't need a Mac for that.

homebrew removes that hassle. "brew install" doesn't make you download and build everything from source.

It doesn't need to know that. When you use a GUI app to download an app (web browser, for example), the executable is marked 'quarantine.' When you build an app yourself, it doesn't get marked 'quarantine.'

How would "speed camera apps" encourage illegal behavior? The state patrol in my state is happy for people to know where cops are places on the road, where speed cameras are used ... this knowledge makes people slow down and makes the road safer.

If I were in the market for such a library, I'd still have serious concerns. The GPL license still appears in the root of the repo as if the entire codebase might be subject to GPL; It appears to be a fork of newlib (GPL) and that means it might not qualify as a "clean room implementation" of GPL'd code - the legal team in a corporation is going to insist on a ton of due diligence on Picolibc before they allow it to be used.

Steampunk was most assuredly not born out of the 1999 movie. If some ridiculous movie tainted your view of the genre, I think that's more a reflection of you than the genre or the terrible movie.

That said, the movie was supposedly inspired by a series from the 1960s by a nearly identical name ("The Wild Wild West".) The genre, however, has been around for much longer, and the name 'steampunk' seems to have its creation in the 1980s.
