What are modern operating systems and applications doing?

I first really started to learn how to use computers playing Leisure Suit Larry on a friend's dad's computer. Started with copying save-games to/from floppy disks, to using MS-DOS in general, to BASIC, etc. and so forth.

It's interesting how much of the humor in those games flew way over my head yet I still had a blast playing them. And looking back as an adult, the "risque" stuff was tame as hell but still fun. Sigh, good times.

The problem is all the easy problems have been solved, and even all the hard problems have been solved in science. We're down to the really hard problems, and since our otherwise astoundingly accurate observations of how the universe acts are thrown off by them, everything looks weird and fringe at the very hard edges.

I see the same issues here in the states. I think no matter what the economic model, we need to take a long hard look at the overhead and complexity of healthcare. And by and large, I suspect the insurance companies will be found to be at the root of it.

I am familiar with the project. I’ve owned one for several years, am highly active on the discord and chat with core developers on the regular.

The way it’s phrased in the article linked to makes it sound like it’s “just” a scaler like a Retrotink OSSC. It definitely does fantastic work scaling its own output but it won’t accept an outside analog signal which firmly moves it out of the family of “scaler” to me.

MiSTer doesn't just concern itself with analog signals, it simulates the entire system and outputs the original analog signal or can upscale it for digital output on its own. This description could make somebody think it's just a scaler.

I have a special needs son. Parental controls are useless. Huge swathes of legitimate content gets blocked while he can still get to horrible material I don’t want him watching. His inability to obey any rules has resulted in him losing his pc because we simply couldn’t keep plugging all the holes he was finding to sneak into YouTube. And don’t get me started on streaming services where if you let your kid watch Star Wars, they can also watch The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes.
