It's not that website owners don't care that they're frustrating users, losing visitors and customers, or creating a poor experience. It's an intractable problem for most website owners to combat the endless ways that their sites are being botted and bogged down, and having to pay for resources to handle the 98% of traffic their sites are getting that isn't coming from real users and customers. By all means, solve it and everyone will be happy.

You say that as if it stands as truth on its own. We actually don't need to filter out how people actually talk and think. Otherwise you just end up with yet another enforcer against wrong-think. I wonder if you even think that deeply about it or if you're just wired at this point to conform.

HN skews heavily towards users with very unusual setups. Using one of the least popular browsers on an OS almost no one in the grand scheme of things uses makes you a statistical outlier on its own. Who knows what other obscure configuration choices could be making the problem even worse for such a user?

But yeah, it's none of that just Cloudflare hates brown people or something.

I downgraded a $250/mo plan but it bugged out, re-added it to my account, and charged me. Couldn't remove it. Contacted support and after a month of no response they closed the ticket.

Created another ticket. After a week they apologized and said something about having a very high volume of support requests.

This article reeks to high hell of the regime propaganda writing we see about domestic politics:

"Yoon — whose approval rating has dipped in recent months — has struggled to push his agenda against an opposition-controlled parliament since taking office in 2022.

Yoon’s conservative People Power Party had been locked in an impasse with the liberal opposition Democratic Party over next year’s budget bill. He has also been dismissing calls for independent investigations into scandals involving his wife and top officials, drawing quick, strong rebukes from his political rivals."

See the same patterns. You can tell which side they want to paint in a bad light and what do you know it's the conservative side.

Use Cloudflare's Turnstile captcha. It's leagues ahead of Google's or hCaptcha. Users never have to click on stupid images, and it works great. You're not going to be able to stop people manually signing up but depending on how they're doing it, you might curb some of it.

These guys have loads of email addresses and can just use a VPN to switch to a new IP in seconds. Often accompanied with a completely fresh browser session that you're going to have a hard or impossible time correlating with past attempts.

Parse the domain portion of the email address and check that against a blacklist of throwaway and fishy email domains. Manually blacklist domains as needed. You can find blacklists hosted on GitHub. Use the Public Suffix List to parse the domain to make sure you don't accidentally ban an entire obscure TLD. Parse down the email domain to remove any subdomain when checking against the blacklist.

If you're really serious, you can use an API provided by SendGrid to check for suspicious email addresses. You can also look into MaxMind minFraud.

Ban IP addresses. Not every spammer is highly sophisticated and sometimes a single, fixed IP will be responsible for many spam attempts spanning months at a time.

Devise a way to fingerprint browers. This can be as simple as a random hash set to some innocuous cookie name. Ban offenders by those too. It's not always going to work but a lot of spammers aren't terribly sophisticated and you'll be able to catch them even if they're IP hopping.

Yeah NPR and Fox are the same degree of biased. It's just harder for people to tell that NPR is biased because its bias is aligned better with the liberal regimes of most western countries. If the regime in your country was right leaning, you'd see most media display that bias and NPR would be your go-to example of something unhinged and biased.

Most left leaning people can't even tell when they're watching something biased towards their beliefs because to them it's just like a fish swimming in water.

Europe's idea of conservative is what Americans would call far left. It's all relative anyway. If you're just trying to conserve something left wing against something even farther left wing then it's still left. Mostly meaningless label. Almost no one even knows where the political terms left and right came from. People call Afghanistan right wing as if that means something.
