I’ve been innovating on bookmarks for decades. Money, receipts, paint swatches, entire spiral notebooks, ripped off corners of magazines… bookmarks are everywhere!

Aren’t those all industries that are now highly regulated because they proved themselves to be untrustworthy?

There’s a surprising amount of negativity in here. Matrix is great for me. I’m happy to see the improvements. I’m also happy to hear the team is approaching sustainability. Matrix isn’t perfect but it has only improved in the 5 years I’ve been using it. I’m looking forward to what they can do in another 5 years.

Audiobookshelf has become a key service in my self hosted stack. I use it primarily for podcast management and it’s been wonderful. I use plappa on iOS as my client and the offline support is stellar. I’m building a FreeBSD port for it too so it can have a forever home on my stable server.

This was a thoughtful comment but I’m not sure how useful it is at all due to the typo. Commendable vs commandable? I have a pet peeve for typos so your highly accomplished comment is really unworthy of the photons used to display it.

The mind-body connection is quite real. Improving your physical state will almost certainly have a non-zero improvement on your mental state. Exercising can really help you make sense of all those other things you have going on. Not to mention that being in shape and strong makes every physical thing you do easier.

The visudo command is often times available as well. It won’t let you save a malformed sudoers file. Finding other footguns though is an exercise for the reader.

I just ran a test and I was able to do just as many flip resets in Hacker League as I was in Rocket League.

In the time it took me to learn a new programming language, my kid learned how to be a whole entire human being. Including free thought and autocorrect mode. I don’t know what makes us special in the animal kingdom, but watching that happen certainly feels special. Do whales feel the same way about their young?

FWIW I had to undo B) just yesterday. I thought the same thing about resolving records in order but it does not. I didn’t dive too far in, but my proxy server would occasionally query my router instead of the pihole for DNS requests. Maybe I just did it wrong :)

For the record I was assigning these DNS server IPs via docker compose. So perhaps that makes a difference.

Epic took away player to player trading in rocket league just to support a new game mode in Fortnite (rocket racing). Now the only way to get items is through the item shop using real money. Have a dozen copies of the same item because you’ve been playing since 2015 and want to gift it to somebody? Too bad, not possible. Rocket League is dying, but hey at least rocket racing in Fortnite has familiar assets!

We would back up double-digit GB MySQL databases by piping mysqldump into gzip as well. Like you I’m sure there’s a size limit where that doesn’t work. I never found out if it was CPU or memory constrained though.

There’s something to be said about drastically reducing your threat surface too. Locking down 1 server is easier than locking down a fleet. You can still have security in depth inside your server.

Not sure how abrasive this would actually be in a boss v employee scenario. However, hearing people order food this way makes me cringe.

Docker has been a godsend for home labs. People don't need to know where on the filesystem their configs have been scattered (distro dependent). They just need to know how to docker pull and configure their container.

I’m not so sure that would keep the pitchforks away.

Lots of good suggestions in here. In the end, none of us know your daughter. If you are out of ideas on things to do with her, take her with you to something you enjoy doing. If you’re enthusiastic about it, she might be too. Also, there’s nothing wrong with uneducational fun either. Watch a movie or find shapes in the clouds. Be silly and teach her how to laugh on a budget.

Don't be afraid of failure! You're tougher than that, trust me. Turns out failure is pretty easy to get over. What's harder to get over is a life full of regret.

You didn’t mention much about your personal life. Your professional life sounds successful, maybe you’re looking for fulfillment somewhere else?

I actually found myself needing something like this a couple weeks ago. I use a self-hosted platform (cloudron.io) that allows for custom apps. I wanted to host a static blog on that server. Some people are happy to accept "bloat" if it does, in fact, make life easier in some way.

I still like to do all those things as a parent! But I AM too busy and tired to do it impromptu.

I hope when you become an elder the next generation shows you the respect you are currently lacking.

This is a good point. There are many elderly people struggling to keep up with technological advances. I’ve seen these poor people get confused by things like WiFi passwords and self checkout kiosks at the grocery store. Of course these same people would likely never step foot in a Tesla. But it is important to think about these drivers when taking into account the safety of these systems.
