I don't think any scamming should be normalized.

Apple has been gate keeping for decades. It's a fundamental part of their business strategy.

Anyone still expecting anything different is ignoring reality.

It's really not complicated. If you want to continue to be gate kept, use their products and keep giving them your money. If you don't want to be involved with their shady practices, stop giving them your money and using their products.

It was kinf of a protest against the whole popcicle stick controversy in Path or Exile. People were getting banned for using macros and I wanted to demonstrate it was a pointless battle. Yes, ban botters and cheaters, but not for loops that reduce injury.

I was automatong pressing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in a loop with a knob to adjust the loop time. This was to protest Path of Exile potion management requiring you to constantly press that for hours near end game. Also, to be clear, this is not a good potion strategy in terms of being competitive, it's a survival mechanism.

I had the opposite problem actually I think. I have these small nano teensy USB things that are programmable similar to Arduino, but they have a poor negotiation at start. I was using these to automate keyboard activity, so when plugged in they appear as a USB HID.

This crappy 7 port hub is one of the only ones that "works" to reprogram the chips over USB. Direct connections and other hubs cause it to always appear as a HID and never appear as a thing that can be reprogrammed.

My 8 year old nefew can come into random HN threads and post "this is trash yo" and that would also be the same signal I suppose.

Those are closer to real objective analysis. Much better than hand waving near LLMs and dismissing the content without articulating why. My guess is that a comment that directly says that doesn't get as much traction and depending on how straight-faced it was could be violating the guidelines on accusing someone of manipulating HN, etc.

In this case someone could argue you are very verbose, needlessly breaking things into lists, and comparing or contrasting things that don't have much impact or relation.

None of this is new to AI. Top ten lists, spam, etc. have existed for a long time. If you want to disagree with someone on the Internet, you do have to actually articulate what your gripes are to some extent beyond just hand waving near LLMs, etc.

None of that is specific to the actual content. Might as well just say "I don't like it" which is also not objective analysis.

This article was about math functions, chrome, etc. If the author got something wrong, mention that, or if you don't like the pacing or how the content was divided into pieces, etc.

Sounds needlessly divisive.

Why not criticize the content instead of the source or medium?

The US cannot produce most of what that TSMC can can. And those US factories aren't rolling yet either.

Hi! I have been following n-gate.com a small bit over the years, because I found it very interesting and it was a rabbit hole I wanted to go down.

I actually setup "xor-gate" for a while, which was trying to be a similar thing co-authored by a friend, but it was too time consuming and we gave up.

Did the author pass? I'm not trying to be crass, but I don't know the details.

I think HN should be a place where I am excited to see what others have to add. When I see a post I am excited to see what takes and spins others have on it. I do want real criticism and a lively debate about important things, but there has to be a balance.

I want to see other comments that seem like they genuinely want to help steer something or build people up. Sometimes I get the impression that's not happening on HN.

It seems similar to operating an arcade or a movie theater and saying that you can have thousands of people enter but then only having space for a couple while still taking everyone's money.

I actually am from this town and I have watched this play out over the last five years. I moved away from Oregon because of these exact kind of problems. My daughter's e-bike was stolen and we had a tracker in it and we attempted to get the police to help us recover it from a homeless encampment where it has been tracked to. We have ever possible way to prove ownership of the bike from beginning to end multiple times over.

The Keizer Police laughed at us and acted like it was absurd that we would try to get our property back or that they would help us in any capacity whatsoever.

I have a video of a KPD officer telling me that he's not going to arrest a junkie because only some spit landed on my daughter because the junkie was spitting on my daughter.

It sucks because Keizer used to be a really nice town and it's where people went to retire. It's where I went to retire as well and that's not how it works anymore.
