Modern Web design seems to focus too much on pretty visual designs. I think that designers should pay more attention to structure, like the original Gopher menus.

One of the major reasons Apple's App Store has taken off is that most Web designs are pretty, but optimized for big screens. They're awkward to look it on small devices like the iPhone. Simple design degrades gracefully.

Hacker News readers probably have at least a passing familiarity with Unix/Linux, but it's still refreshing to be reminded that you can move mountains with short commands.

I'm not knocking Google in any way. It's just that, as the article says, Google seems to be developing their new products because thee engineers think they're cool, regardless of whether they're actually commercial. In this way, Google is the Bell Labs of the 21st century.

Google's non-search products are really just research projects.

Does she have some specific criteria, or is it like the infamous Supreme Court definition of pornography? ;-)
