Leave it the way it is! If hackers find it interesting it'll get upvoted. For example, I upvoted the bee story the other day. It was a really interesting article and I don't think my wife, for example, would give any shits about it.

I've heard that Postfix is as close to perfect you can get, but I haven't dived in personally.
I've used Django for years, but Flask is the bomb.

PHP is the quickest to get up and going and will probably be the cheapest to host. Unless you go the Google App Engine route. PHP is probably the most promiscuous though.
Django and PHP (CakePHP, Codeigniter, etc), and obviously RoR.
My current favorite is Python/Flask.

The authorization happens at the time you request the photo url, not the photo itself. So the security is on finding out what the url is, not the actual photo request. It'd be the same as someone being able to login if they know your password. That URL is the password.
Don't think it's a good idea. OS X works great for all of my development needs, even if the target environment is linux. Also, I tend to believe linux users are especially picky about which distros they prefer.
