Except you know that bars, etc. are going to ask for more details, including full name, address etc. And they'll say it's needed to prevent known hooligans and troublemakers.

I wouldn't expect this at all. Being visually recorded, maybe. I'd hope governments step in and prevent creating private databases around that.

I absolutely disagree that coherent data means people provide anything asked for.

Cookies &c are examples of tech that got away without regulation when it was needed. This is regulation. It's needed.

Companies will drag this forward anyway. Apple into their proprietary tent, everyone else in every direction they can. It's a very legitimate role of government to try to put some controls on this mess, and the ideas behind those controls is a better next generation system.

I think this discussion is going in a few unhelpful directions. These "wallets" are not used for financial transactions, they're for credentials. They are an alternative to paper/plastic driver's licenses, proof of majority, etc. Selective disclosure is a specific thing, it's not relevant to compare it to "full disclosure." If you must compare, it is much easier to understand what it means to use a very fine grained proof ("the person in this picture is over 21") compared to handing over many personal details on a typical physical ID (full name, exact birth date, medical conditions, address, country of birth, etc).

People going bankrupt through credit abuse is a separate issue from learning how to technically use such instruments. Many know how to "properly" use it, but have a weakness where the only solution may be to impose limitations. Many others are taken in by misleading tactics. Fine grained digital approaches can help those situations.

It is partially how you look at it. I want information systems to become coherent á la the semantic web, but in a specifically user-specific way (which is one of the ideas of Solid). I think that well defined digital credentials are an opportunity to give people a better view of the information they hold, and to enable ways to make issuers more accountable with a fine grained approach; eg evaluable axioms per credential fashioned after "law as code" approaches. This could be connected to a neuro-symbolic AI so the user can discuss scenarios outside transactions. Especially with an increase in inter-related credentials, that will make it easier to manage and less of a separate world that some institutions and companies control, which I think is incredibly valuable. Some of these ideas aren't possible yet, but we aren't going to get there by continuing to produce grey goo systems.

While credit has harmed some people (which is regrettable and should be resolved) it has enabled the vast majority of users to build better lives past other forms of capital. With digital systems and well defined data, the user can walk through clear, directly relevant, and private scenarios of what their next action will yield, without any dependency on a particular provider. But only if there is a forceful move to coherent data.

The same thing that did the education for people to learn a credit card or their smartphone, it's a mixture of banks, friends, work. It's a gradual thing, there's no need to remove curriculum.

I don't know what you're imagining as an alternative.

User education, personal AI, responsible vendors will be part of the solution. Seamless and safe transactions are very much desirable, there is a whole world to build on once they're in place, so there is a lot of motivation to solve them, but the solution shouldn't come from a few vendors that have no real regard for the collective outside their customers.

With SOLID any site can simply say "we need your tax records to prove you're a human or combat fraud whatever".

This is not true. But there are human factors issues to solve. Personal AI will help.

Most of what google &c possess is inference and real-time metadata, which is the real dark magic. Giving people precise control over their identity and information via standards will be a huge gain, but it's not an easy task.

Right, the person saying "they use it" as opposed to "refer to it" is an indicator. It's a great feature, using on-device "AI" (privacy preserving), and available since Pixel 2 (2018).

That's great news, I didn't know they had rolled out those features. I don't really want to rewrite my extensions for another browser, but I'll see how applicable the others might be.

I've been an Android user since day 1, but am very impressed by some of these features. I'd love to have the half-click to focus feature and other dedicated camera button features, macro, a few other things that put this generation in a next category. I'd like to see them catch up and surpass all of Google's onboard AI features, and it looks like they're working on it. Being able to find a section of a video by a vague description, all on-device, is incredible. And they're finally improving their photo app. If Apple offered call screening, ambient song identification/logging, and allowed browsers to support extensions, I'd be tempted to switch, especially since they have a clearer privacy story. I'm glad strong competition is continuing, especially around privacy.

If we're talking æsthetics, I find they all look like silver blimps (glad they're finally shipping darker tones, but it's an affectation). I've seen a lot of dented Macbooks. I don't think they're any sturdier than any other well built laptop, which last until they're obsolete (5 - 10 years). The alu does act as a heat sink, but I doubt it's necessary for the entire body.

I'm sticking with Thinkpads for now, I like the function-dictates brutality of their design and I think carbon/magnesium and some plastic is a good approach for a much lighter result. A Macbook Pro is not only heavy, but slippery. A lot of carbon is used recycling and even shipping aluminum, and the decreasing factor of being able to easily upgrade/repair components. I don't know ultimately what the environmental impact is between the materials, but Apple has advantages of consistency and scale; as much as I like Thinkpads, I don't like that there are a dozen different models each year, which would be impossible to effectively recycle even if they had a program in place.

We're pretty much into a blog here (here's a picture of a beach), but I tried a Macbook, had to return it because of ergonomic factors including weight; I got a pretty great 16" Thinkpad with the same weight as the 14" MBP, I don't even want to think about the weight of the 16" MBP. It's frustrating other top tier companies or the industry can't find a way to have efficient product cycles (Framework is getting there). I guess it doesn't help that Apple has patented their unibody design, which shows how much they care about environment in the larger sense.

I don't understand how they can roll out this feature across all regions. Call recording laws are different in many jurisdictions, and this is like a superset of call recording. I think it's a useful feature for a person, but to collect info on other people (in calls, emails, etc that appear on screen) and be able to process it is like an evil superpower.

Whenever I start looking into a device like this, I'm reminded how much progress has been held back by the grip Amazon has on the book world. Building on shared book annotations would be a great way to develop intelligence, but it can only be on the down-low.

Usually this is a sign of a project that isn't ready for a lot of attention. It's very brave and a little bit stupid to offer Open Source to the world (especially without a sustainability plan), if you put a lot of effort into 'marketing' at an early stage you've probably just overpromised to people not focused on that domain, won't be able to deliver, and will burn out, and it will become yet another abandoned project.

Perhaps in a few years, as the project picks up uses and contributors, it will get its own website and support network and be easy to understand and use by "anyone."

My impression is larger or more synthetic orgs don't want devs to lead things anymore, they want a very top down development of vision -> product -> ux -> project management, and then the developers scurry around and do whatever it is they do using cloud something something, hopefully in as commodity a way as possible. The article clearly states the problems with this; devs can no longer understand the whole picture or make important top level suggestions, and the cloud dictates what can be done.

$0, unless maybe someone finds a way to not pillage the data of the service and add a lot of actual value, and doesn't squat on this ultimately simple thing that should be a small piece of a much larger thing.

open source AI and browser/OS companies are going to provide an answer soon anyway.

In the reddit thread, several people asked about your 'talk like a pirate' training, and you never responded. In this thread, you imply you'll talk about how you used this visualization in your training, yet you never do.

Would this be a sort of holy grail product, where we could write once for 'edge/function/lambda' systems? I am helping develop a new project that will be hosted on Azure, but would really like to make it as cloud portable as possible, including a cloud-free version. It is a significant product for a government agency, and it will be open source. I really want to get this piece right. Thanks!

[edit] I notice Azure support is under development. But the time frame could be ok if it has good tests & the project is well supported.

In contrast to another comment, I found this review rather over the top in romanticism. "Newly-shipped OSes just have a certain special something about them" - aka bugs. I get the reminiscing angle (though I think it's not the best thing to dwell on) but people should be asking whether they will use this device, and at its current weight and cost and (literal) hand-waving utility, it really doesn't seem very compelling to anyone but a VR/AR/3D enthusiast or a developer, unless maybe the virtual monitor experience becomes very good, but then comments on long term comfort are mixed.

I have a Quest Pro which I pull out from time to time, I don't regret the exploration opportunity, but this kind of device is currently just confining and awkward. The Vision Pro is even heavier, with their questionable use of aluminum it really seems they target collectors rather than comfort, which is odd in an age of e-waste consciousness. For many people, it basically seems like a "treat" for those with excess wealth since nobody really describes it as useful like a computer or phone.

I have no doubt Apple (among others) anticipates a world where super high resolution sensor laden headsets are lightweight and much less expensive. It really seems more sensible as a peripheral, though I know that goes against their DNA as one device for every category.
