I don't think you explained it well from the boss's perspective. Why didn't he want you to rewrite the app from C++ to Ruby? Maybe it's not just that you did too much work, but that you're making things tougher for everyone else. Do you have other ruby developers on staff? Does the support staff know how to support a ruby app? Maybe he wants you to take a weekend off so that you can be fresh on Monday.

The "error-free Internet"? Really?

The truth is that most engineers are aware of what Agile is. It's a series of principles used to run a software development project. Agile isn't a set of tools or a movement or a methodology. It's only people who are selling tools or books or a viewpoint that talk like this.

From the trenches, I have never worked in Agile. I've worked with "agile" and I've worked in teams organized using agile principles. But, the orthodoxy has come from consultants, who were quickly shown the door.

How does this compare to the real user monitoring in NewRelic? I know NR is commercial and not cheap, but in features? Thanks!

I took the admittedly stupid approach of just clicking the link, while at work, with my office door open. As it turns out, it's on the up-and-up, all good, works as expected.

Comcast has it's own netflix-like service. They call it something like Xfinity OnDemand. It's actually not terrible.

This. I work roughly 55 hours a week. I love my work, but I wish I didn't have to work so hard. We're constantly hiring, but always a couple hires behind the workload. Of course, it's my responsibility to oversee this process, so it's all my fault. Anyway...the ambiguity is obvious.

I hate to be the....umm...what's the opposite of naysayer? Yaysayer? I hate to be the yaysayer here, but...

1) The design is great! Simple, fast, easy to read. I understood the point immediately.

2) There's a use for this. I won't say "need", because you know there isn't a need. But, people will find it nice and will use it.

3) If you're doing this to get rich, then I misread you and you should quit now. But, if you're doing this to do something good, then I think you nailed it.

Now, for some naysaying: 1) As others have said, putting your wife's real name and address up was simply stupid. Take it down, now.

2) Moderation? How do you choose which ask to feature?

I think any project worth doing will have some competition. "competition" can also mean "market validation". I understand you're not trying to get rich off this, but I think you'd like it if someone used it :) In my opinion, the fact that reddit already does it means you're probably onto something.

Wouldn't this encourage cross-department collaboration? My logic goes like this: Collaborating makes one succeed. But, you don't want your team to succeed, because then you might be laid off. But, people on other teams aren't in competition with you. So, if you collaborate with them, you can really kick the ass of that jerk next to you that you used to be friends with.

I'm joking...mostly.

Pasting code from a website, even with explanations, worries me far more than someone recording my Internet search history.

If it's on a technical topic, then I say post it. But, we've seen a lot of repetition and hand-wringing on the subject. If it doesn't add anything new to the conversation, whether that conversation is about the NSA or any other topic, then I say to ditch it. With the NSA stories, the signal is unusually important, but the noise is also unusually high.

Server based lookups have their own problems. An attacker can guess a session ID and spoof that customer. Storing hundreds of thousands of session IDs on disk or in the database can lead to performance problems. You'd leak huge amounts of information if someone were to gain access to the database or filesystem where these cookies are stored.

You can argue about solutions to each of these. My point is that each solution has their own problems. IMO, play's solution has worked well so far, making it easy to scale horizontally. I've been using play for 3 years. One security issue in 3 years, with a quick patch applied, is acceptable. Before that we used PHP, and we had many problems dealing with the huge volume of sessions to be handled.

I'm torn. On one hand, this is delicious irony. On the other hand, the Republicans have used any pretence to tell us that the President is a terrorist, Muslim, non-American, bad guy of any sort. There is no way to satisfy this request without it becoming another hyperbolic, red-faced accusation-fest.

I heard a Republican say "there have been so many scandals directed at the President, and he's managed to dodge all of them. He can't be innocent of all of them!" It shocked me because it was an argument for "guilty until proven innocent." My response was "there have been so many accusations, all baseless, that you have to start wondering about the truthfulness of those making the accusations. Isn't it time we just started ignoring all of these so-called scandals?"

I'm at that point now. I can't take the NSA thing seriously because I've heard the boy cry "wolf!" too many times.

Yeah, I thought that was confusing. "We're the only", "but in some circumstances we're not really talking about everyone". I thought it was worth answering the question "did GM pay back it's loan" because GM is the largest and most notorious recipient of US loan money.

Maybe Tesla really did mean "We're the only American company who received an ATVM loan to pay it back." But, if so, they're being intentionally misleading.

I'm not an economist, but this is how I understand it. GM paid back it's debt in full, but it paid most of it back in stock. The US government has sold some of it, so it's gotten about half of it's bailout back in cash. But, it still has a ton of GM stock. It's selling the stock slowly to avoid disrupting the market.

That being said, the government needs to sell at something like $75/share to make their money back, but it's at $33 as I write this.

You're right. I shouldn't have busted on plants vs zombies. My point was that Minecraft is a particularly good game.

It's more than that. I have an 8 year old and an 11 year old who are into minecraft. Minecraft is 100x better than other video games. My son is using redstone and logic gates to build things. My daughter designs these expansive cities with, yes, pools full of wool. It's better than shooting zombies with peas or wiping out the world with an engineered parasite.

My mother lost both breasts, her gallbladder and her fallopian tubes to 4 separate cancers. When they discovered the BRCA gene mutations, she was tested and turned out positive. My sister tested positive and had proactive masectomies and hysterectomies. I was tested as well, but came up negative for the BRCA mutations (phew). I'm male, but if I was positive it would have meant changes for my daughter.

One advantage of the human genome project was that it lead to discoveries like the BRCA mutations. Now, the women in my life could decide ahead of time to prevent these cancers.

I think you misunderstand. The proposed changes are simply to remove the tax exemption. State sales tax will apply to internet purchases, just like they do for mail order. The confusion comes from the weird sales tax systems in place. I live in Colorado where the sales tax rates change according to a maze of Byzantine laws.

Yeah, I struggle with design. I've been working on that page, but don't have anything to push yet. Thanks for the advice, it doesn't fall on deaf ears. I've been thinking of offering a trade in hours...maybe post to craigslist.
