Thanks for the correction, I didn't actually do the math for that, just remembered something I've read a while back, but the numbers where different 20% vs 21%.
Apparently I don't understand exponential growth either cause I assumed a 5% difference scales linearly (as in the difference between 20% vs 21% growth rates for a given period should be the same as between 2% and 2.1%).
But you don't need to go to Siberia for Earth to be extremely difficult to survive in.
Wherever you are, if you lack technology your chance of surviving is very low. Without clothing, housing, fire, tools it's very, very hard to survive anywhere on Earth.
The only reason life is so safe and pleasant right now on this planet is because we changed our environment to make it so.
If we were to survive on Mars, we would have to do the same. The advantage with Mars is that we wouldn't have to start from scratch.
I would gladly accept lower pay at a startup than working at a megacorp.
In my view, the fact the megacorps offer better job security and still have to pay a premium for employees, just show that the jobs aren't that attractive/enjoyable etc.
If we don't maintain the replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman, the worlds population will eventually shrink exponentially. If that doesn't scare you, I don't know what will.
Why don't you start a European subsidiary? That would be a really good way to scale without compromising on quality. The need is great for something like that.
They haven’t “won” anything yet...a high private unicorn valuation doesn’t mean success.
We could debate what "success" means endlessly, but if you're a VC, your job is to put money in companies with low valuations that will eventually end up with high valuations.
I live in one of those cities as well and sold my diesel car last year when the talks regarding the ban started. I now drive a petrol car. It's not that big of a difference.
Interesting perspective, haven't thought of it this way before. It does still provide some benefit to the country though, they can use that money for something else instead of having to pay it back to Japan.
Snap is not a clear case of failing. Sure, they did not displace Facebook, but the founders and investors made a lot of money and while it isn't growing as fast as it should, it is still growing every day.
What I'm also interested in is how much money do lawsuits like these cost.
Both companies have large amounts of cash, so this isn't one of those cases where the one with the most money wins, but I do expect both of them to spend a lot.

I often asked myself what happens when I give an app access to my photos. Can that app upload all my photos to their servers? The same question for things like calendar, address book, health data etc.
