I started a company in that market 10 years ago. We compete with palantir. It’s a competitive market with lots of actors.

On of their strengths is the ability of thiel to raise lots of money, and win huge gov contracts by convincing everyone that what he built is magic. it is not.

palantir is regular enterprise software. morally, they are vilains for sure, but their superpower is being excellent at marketing themselves.

As many people already commented, no one actually visualizes graphs of that size at once.

Context: I’m the CTO of a GraphViz company, I’ve been doing this for 10+ years.

Here are my recommendations:

- if you can generate a projection of your graph into millions of nodes, you might be able to get somewhere with Three.js, which is a JS library to generate WebGL graphics. The library is close enough to the metal to allow you to build something large and fast.

- if you can get the data below 1M nodes, your best shot is Ogma (spoiler: my company made it). It scales well thanks to WebGL and allows for complex interactions. It can run a graph layout on the GPU in your browser. See https://doc.linkurious.com/ogma/latest/examples/layout-force...

- If you want to keep your billions of nodes but are OK with not seeing the whole graph at once, my company builds Linkurious. It is an advanced exploration interface for a graph stored in Neo4j (or Amazon Neptune). We believe that local exploration up to 10k nodes on screen is enough, as long as you can run graph queries and full-text search queries against the whole graph with little friction. I love the idea of a simplified SQL syntax for joins.

I have been working with graph databases for years now: these databases had to solve this problem from day one, because of the focus on relationships between entities.

I must point out that Neo4j was the first to propose a syntax that made traversal feel simple and natural again: the Cypher query language.

Neo4 and other industry players have spent years working on a new standard query language for graph databases that was released in April this year: GQL. GQL is the first database query language normalized by ISO since SQL, so it’s a big deal.

They are not the same thing. The BlazeGraph team was acqui-hired into the AWS Neptune team, but Neptune is not based on BlazeGraph tech.

I work closely with Neo4j and Memgraph.

What is happening to Neo4j is not directly related to Memgraph. Neo4j raised a lot of cash and their investors have a lot of expectations now, this puts their sales under a lot of pressure and has pushed them to raise prices.

On the other hand, Memgraph is cheap and aims at being compatible with Neo4j from an API point of view (even though their don't share any tech background : Neo4js is Java, Memgraph is C++).

Memgraph can be a good replacement for Neo4j, but is not yet popular enough to be a menace for Neo4j in the short term.

I was working in a French government-funded Web preservation project.

Many projects like internet archive exist, they are not necessarily publicly accessible via the internet (in France the archive can be consulted from public libraries via dedicated computers).

This reminds me of a project I was remotely involved with: Airbus having to handle an aircraft order number above 5 digits as they were delivering their 10’000th aircraft to a customer.

This was a multi year project where we had to deliver software used to map risk and impact across the whole company.

I just checked, France has 70000 polling stations and 280000 volunteers for each election, so it’s rather 0.4% of the population.

We just had presidential elections and are electing representatives for parlement next week, we had local elections in 2020, nation-wide elections are not that rare.

We’ve been using helpscout for the last 6 years, it’s good but we will be migrating to another service (to be defined) soon.

Reasons:

- they are expensive, and have announced a price increase next august

- they do not offer options to host data in europe

- they have no web ui for customers to track all their requests (helpscout is mail-only)
