Leaving aside the non-trivial question of candidate nervousness in live coding, I do find the "ask questions about take-home" process very illuminating.

If it came from a friend or chatGPT, you'll learn that quickly because you can ask them stuff like "show me how you're implementing FOO. OK, if the requirements change, and now we need to BAR, what do you need to change across the app?" If they wrote the code and understood the task, they should understand what needs to change, how to do it, etc, and you can do that part with them live. Maybe someday LLMs will be fast enough that you can't catch someone constantly waiting for the AI to help them, at least as of May 2025 we're not there yet.

What would non-“meaningless virtue signaling” look like to you? This seems quite decent as far as these things go.

I just downloaded it and tested it out. It really is a very cool, polished product.

The video cuts when you remove "uh" and "um" are too jarring for anything professional, but OTOH for some internal work stuff I could see a use for this. And as someone who has used 0 video editing software, I was able to start making changes within like a minute, which I think is quite impressive.

That said, not sure I have enough use case to pay for it, personally.

I understand your PoV, but I like to stronnnnnngly encourage 1:1s every week, with each team member. I think it's really easy to let that slip if it's not in the calendar, and I've learned so many important, small things from people in those meetings.

Especially since some people don't really feel comfortable coming to their manager out of band. That makes the structure of "I have a block scheduled you with every week, in perpetuity" super valuable.

Agree with the loose agenda. I try to follow-up on things that came up in previous weeklies, and to make sure we don't forget about commitments, but so much of the value comes from a simple "How are you doing?"

In North and South America, and in other European cities (though certainly not all!), my experience has been that Uber is 99% of the time

1. better UX, and 2. cheaper

than taxis, _generally_. In Berlin, taxi service is generally professional/clean/fine, but it's quite expensive, and when I travel to other places I get quickly spoiled by the Uber experience/cost. I understand why they ban it here, but from an end-user perspective, really wish they didn't.

In comparison with any other major city where Uber operates, taxis are quite expensive here.

That’s fair, but surely the concept of sharing music with friends isn’t so crazy? Not saying it was necessarily handled well here, but it seems like a feature many would and do want.

It's a complicated issue to be sure, but developers also benefit from a platform that has high trust among users. I think users are probably much more likely to try out new apps and even pay for them if they know ahead of time that the apps been vetted, the payment processor is secure (and already has your details), etc.

Not that there isn't crap on the iOS App Store, but I don't think it's controversial to suggest that the Good to Bad App ratio is better there than on the web as a whole.

Devil’s advocate: what _is_ wrong with that logic? If we accept that customs can search our persons or luggage as a condition of our entering a given country, what is it about digital materials that makes them off limits?

If so, please make it an option like with giphy. I personally prefer the 'russian roulette' aspect to just firing and seeing what comes up :)

That's nice when possible, but of course when something breaks you never know if it will be one hour or 30, and even then, I think there are a lot of cases where "let the developer know there's an issue" is still worth it, especially if the alternative is "drop it and say nothing because it's too much of a hassle."

Hey guessmyname, I'm surprised to hear that. As an expat working/living in Berlin for the last 5 years or so that hasn't been my experience.

Also, my current company has been hiring for a while now, and we may be an outlier, but we get lots of applications from people outside the EU and always take them seriously. We've helped several people go through the visa process already.

I can't find the link now, but I remember reading about a paper (probably through Marginal Revolution) that showed that, in the GDR, because men and women worked equally and earned equally (in the general case, party leaders aside), a lot of cultural gender equality just became the norm. E.g. men couldn't impress women with nice cars or any of the other status symbols that are so common in the West, and had to 'convince potential mates' through their personalities and actions.

So a lot of the gender roles of the West were basically obliterated, i.e. there was no real stay-at-home mother in the GDR, all mothers were working mothers. Seems to fit your experience, and the GP as well.

Berlin, Germany: Took some savings from working back in the States, got here on a 90-day tourist visa, found an apartment and got my first working visa (without about 2 weeks to spare!, although you can extend a tourist visa here) as an English teacher. Later transitioned into a full-time development job.

Came here with my German girlfriend though, so I had a bit of help in terms of language, talking with bureaucracy, etc. But getting a visa (at least as an American!) was fairly straightforward and cheap, if occasionally slow and, well, bureaucratic.

Been here about 4 1/2 years now and love it.

Very cool. Signed up. I often find myself looking at technologies and thinking "Oh, I'll use that someday," then forgetting about them.

Feature request: Allow user to set minimum required browser support more granularly, e.g. 'IE>9 && 90%', kind of like how https://github.com/postcss/autoprefixer does

It can be done with flexbox now[1]. Which IE11 also supports[2] :)

Not the parent, but I found it incredibly useful as well. The thing is, I would always forget it existed, and so its utility was kind of low for me. I was blown away when I first hooked everything up to it, then barely touched it until they pivoted, at which point I lost interest and disconnected all my accounts from them.

A shame, but not sure how to solve that problem.

Actually there is an option, if you go to chrome://flags on Mac you can turn on "Tab Overview", which lets you hold down option and swipe down with 3 fingers to see an expose type overview of all open tabs. Pretty nice.

Cool site, will probably use it. Would be nice if, in the big view of upcoming movies, the posters were more prominent. As is, the big bootstrap buttons draw all the attention, which makes it harder to scan quickly.
