I found in my research that people defending the title “engineer” rarely coherently define what an engineer is, usually boiling it down to “engineers solve problems”. The arguments against the title tend to be a little more developed, as are the arguments about transcending it.

It's a pity the author didn't go into more detail about why problem-solving is not the key defining characteristic of engineers. Since the author claims this is somehow not coherent enough, I'll share my very strong view that this is exactly what separates engineers from programmers:

Engineers apply technology to solve problems. They are rarely interested in technology just for the sake of it (that's what scientists are for), but rather in what it can do for them.

Most people in our industry today are far from being engineers. Engineers don't pick their technologies based on hype (or more charitably, excitement), and then try to find problems to solve. That's how some companies ended up using machine learning for projects where simpler statistical methods would have sufficed. It's how inexperienced developers fell for MongoDB's marketing and jumped straight to using it without considering whether it's better for their use case than the alternatives. It explains how at some point a ton of companies were using blockchain for things that could have been done with centralised databases (although that one's likely more due to company executives trying to impress investors).

If you’re always focused on using the latest thing, you’ll always have a solution in search of a problem. Reach for new tools when you have or anticipate a problem that you think might reasonably be solved by such tools. Do that and you've at least inched a bit closer to being able to reasonably refer to yourself as software engineer... if that's your thing - I'm generally not a fan of the title myself, but the engineering mindset is the most important thing I look for when interviewing candidates.

Not OP, but hopefully this helps with your first point: we're happily using Sorbet with Rails (leveraging sorbet-rails). It's by no means perfect, but a gradual typing experience in Ruby never will be, unless you restrict the way you use the language. The benefits of having at least some level of type-checking outweigh the cons, IMHO. Sorbet picks up many of the little typos that only become apparent when you try out the code / run a test. I've been using an unofficial VS Code extension for ages, and I really like the increase in iteration speed.

If you don't mind hosting on AWS, Elastic Beanstalk is a pretty streamlined way to host Rails apps, and it doesn't cost anything more than the AWS resources you consume.

It simply shows a loading animation for me. It raises "Error: No available storage method found" on line 2718 of localforage.js. This is Firefox 92 on Ubuntu 24.04.3. It works in Chrome, but I don't use it as my main browser. Spent a minute on it just to see the vim-style navigation, pretty cool. Hope the bug report helps!

I switched from Mac to Linux more than 3 years ago, and I've been gaming on Linux for 2 years. I'm far from a hardcore gamer, but I got back into gaming just because I wanted to see how far Linux gaming had come. I was pleasantly surprised. I've played quite a few native games, but also some running on Proton. I was amazed when Doom (2016) ran with excellent performance. The Witcher 3 is another one with great support. I only cracked and started dual booting Windows when I couldn't get Doom Eternal running properly. It felt like such a betrayal! But since then I've decided to be more pragmatic about things.

I still prefer running things on Linux where possible, and I sometimes buy native Linux games even if I don't know when I'll get around to playing them. There are definitely some rough edges, but I think there's a future for Linux gaming. I think it's mostly due to Valve, which is why I get all my games from Steam.

I can't say too much because I don't want to expose anything confidential, but there's definitely good money in this. We've declined advances from similar companies. At least no-one has asked us for data proactively, which would be an insane thing to agree to, and which is what's being reported in TFA. In fact, the only way I'd agree to something like this is if the there was a simple approval step (e.g. employee gets an e-mail that says "Company X is attempting to access your payroll history, click this link if you agree."). But some people believe that negates the usefulness of their offering. Well, so be it. No sharing our data then.

Experience: Ruby on Rails. If you've used other web frameworks and are keen to get into Rails we'd definitely consider you! Just be sure to mention that in your application. The work is mostly on the back-end, but some front-end skills are welcome - we're doing more and more interactive things with Vue.js. Bonus points if you know a bit of Flutter, we could use some extra hands on our mobile app but can't yet justify having a second developer working on it full-time.

I was actually just over halfway through 3.091, and it was going quite well, but I had a slight uneasy feeling about knowledge gaps (all my chemistry knowledge is from high school). That's when I started 5.111, and it's really helping to solidify things.

I didn't know about Sadoway, the EdX course has a different instructor. But I checked some of his videos on OCW now, and I really like his enthusiasm!

Chemistry. I was never really interested in it, but recently discovered that it's one of the best (and enjoyable) ways to learn more about the workings of the physical world, purely for curiosity's sake. Doing the MIT 5.111 course on OCW and the MIT 3.091 course on EdX.

Also re-learning modern JavaScript, and TypeScript too - I've been using JavaScript professionally since 2003, but always begrudgingly. And spending some time picking up Flutter (and Dart). We're doing more and more work on the front-end and on our mobile app, and as a technical founder it's good to have some idea of what's going on even if you're not writing the code yourself.

Learning to be a better manager too, one mistake at a time, as I've been doing for the past few years.

For the Rails developers like me who are thinking the Django crowd have lost their minds for even considering such a thing (and who went straight to the comments instead of reading the article), I just learnt that Django views are roughly equivalent to Rails controllers.

Not a Python user myself, but Mypy certainly looks interesting. We're currently using Sorbet with Ruby, and it's a great tool, but Mypy seems to be evolving much more rapidly. See, for example, TypeGuard in the submitted link - something TypeScript also has, but we'll probably be waiting a long time for in Ruby land, if we ever see it.
