Would love to get some feedback from you guys. This is my first app and my venture in learning iOS. It took me 2 months to learn and create this app. I would love to share my experience for anyone looking to get started on iOS development. Please note that you need the Media Browser server to try this app. Would be happy to share any information about the controls used in the app and share code samples if requested.

Very nice work. Whats your tech stack like?
Very neat. Bookmarked it! Now keep it up and going. Github link?
Very impressive UI.
I went through a similar phase where I couldn't focus or do anything productive. So I took a break from everything, did some lawn work, re-did my home theater, got a new puppy :) After few weeks of break my partner and I got back together to start things about ideas to work on and within a week we have a list that we can pick from.
Before that I remember we spent weeks without one decent idea.
On a side note, puppy is a lot of fun but she will poop and pee all over the house until housebroken :)
Good Luck
I'm glad you came out and spoke about it rather than ranting about it. Remember Sahil is a famous guy around the startup circle, so dont expect a million dollar funding just because yours looks like gumroad. Have a business model that will make you revenue and build your user base. Listen to your customers and make it the way they want. Put some thought into refunds policies and Rating system that gumroad doesnt have yet.
I felt that gumroad funding was more for Sahil's credentials and than for gumroad itself, so please take that into account.
Very nice idea.. Is this your MVP product? SocialFolders which launched recently has some cool features like this.
I saw on of the comments about "click on ad", are you relying on ad revenue? Have you though of a business model yet?
The UI definitely needs a face lift. Good luck to your future prospects.
Like everyone else has said, use what comes naturally to you. It all comes down to your users and if they like it or not. They are not going to drop you for using php instead of Rails.
On the other hand if you are like me, I have an idea and I want to implement it. But if it fails I alteast want some new technical knowledge. For eg, I learn xcode and write an iPhone app and it bombs but I know iphone app development and that is valuable.
The way I'm tackling my tech stack dilemma, is to look at other successful websites find their tech stack and see if that fits my needs. Good luck!
I'm don't know if Facebook does it. But I personally feel that a lot of the companies should cleanup their bottom 5 - 10%. This will motivate everyone to work harder and learn new stuff. Congratz on your offer!
Ed really wasn't working but just reading HN. He is one of those guys who is always busy but doesnt do anything. The problem is Ed's boss thinks that he is actually good. The problem is not just with Ed though, his boss should have had Sue on call before get Ed on. Sue is lazy too. This is a company that is not getting anywhere. :)
We started building bytecourse.com to aid in online education but left it on the backburner because it lacked any sort of business model. We would love to help you out if you want to host something. Email me at shivaram1190@gmail.com
Thanks. Just when I thought I should start blogging. I would definitely would like to have my own setup.
Is this your slick way to see if your startup idea is worth something? :)
Problem: I do care about my home media which is wiped out if my HDD crashes and of course I'm not able to access them in all my devices.
Proposed solutions: 1) I'm willing to pay a monthly fee only if it is a cloud storage which can be accessed on all devices. I'm not going to pay a monthly fee if am going to store my media in my own HDD and all you provide is a service to access them.
2) One time payment for an app that lets me access my media across all platforms iPhone, android, iPad (esp), mac, windows, PS3, Xbox etc.
There 2 problems here, reliable storage and cross platform accessibility. I think you are suggesting 2 HDDs raided for reliability, which is probably the cheapest solution.
Very useful little tool. Now find a way to monetize it :)
I havent looked at your previous version but here are my thoughts for improvement:
Login Register page resets all the fields if something is wrong in the form
Login and Create Free account buttons flow over the background image in Chrome
The menu buttons are not very clear... Keeping it simple with not a lot of graphics will server better
On the landing page the bottom half font is not pretty try using a different font.
Video Demo, About, Blog links are out of place... try bottom left
Try browser testing on different browsers
Overall text fonts can be improved
Default user image broken.
The map navigation speed is good
Actually the website looks better in IE, all the comments above are for chrome (my default).. I would suggest you guys use Reset.css so that browser specific UI settings are cleared.
Two things that I like to highlight from this article:
You can get anything and everything blocked if you have the resources (money) in India. Eg., Reliance Global
No amount of blocking can prevent bootlegging or piracy. SOPA can never work in India.
I'm a self taught web developer and the way I learnt is by just start coding. Write mini applications, like login and sign up. Build it like a Lego, put small pieces together to build your structure. You will be better off keeping the UI design to the last.
One of my hard learnt lessons is that web applications has to be designed from back to front and not the other way around. Understand how CSS works, theme templates are great and are cheap to buy (themeforrest) but if you didnt know how to manipulate the CSS then you will be left with a lot of frustration.
Earphones falling out of my ears is definitely a problem, but this is a high tech (probably one of the best) solution for a simple problem. It is a hard sell if my ear phones cost less than the adapter. As far as your website is concerned, try showing some more pictures of these custom fits vs the regular ones. As I understand the home "kits" help you get the impression of my ears and using that you will build my custom fits. Shouldn't the home "fit" by free or included in my adapter's price? Just my thoughts and feedback. I would buy one of these if they were more affordable. :)
I actual wish I could send this link to my Boss.. Spot on!!!
Its very interesting to read about non technical co-founders find it really hard to find a CTO for their startup. In our case me and my buddy/partner are both technical and our knowledge set covers from frontend UI to backup DB tuning and performance but what we lacked in business skills made us shelve our first project. We also realized that ideas not always extrapolate into an useful product. Ideas that seemed world changing stopped making sense over time.
Great idea but the design is very similar to http://www.codecademy.com/ you guys should make some UI changes to avoid being tagged copy-cat.
Good idea but your landing page looks like a domain for sale page. The content is not of high quality.
It will help a lot if you moved the email signup to the homepage... Its not bad that it is in the "Plans & Pricing", but it helps to promote the free option and get people to signup.
Agreed... launch early to get the actual users feedback!
Oh man. You are going to get a lot of traffic. Please do something to block a spammer's ip. Have a flag button and do a soft delete it after a certain number of flags. Soft delete because you can review to make sure its actually crap and not the top item in your page :) Good luck
Great idea Kyle. How are you going to clean up spams? I like that its open but if one person decides to spam you will have lot of clean ups to do.
