I put a iPad Air in my bag on Apple's store yesterday. It went up $135 overnight. Cancelled. I'm not sure I do specifically iPad things on it (YouTube, web). Will look at some Android tablets I think. I don't think an iPad Air is worth 835.

Synology 923+. Turns out I’m the only one that connects to it in the house. I don’t actually need it. I’m now retired and really only need some external drives or some HDD’s in a hard drive docking station. I just got a docking station. I’ll grab a couple HDD’s and be done with it. Sell the Synology

I've been on the Mac since 2001 for my personal machines, with Windows at work and I've had linux installations on and off since late '92. I have decided that I won't replace my aging M1 MBP. I got an used thinkpad and installed Fedora 41. It's really been a stellar distro. I've been in it full time for a couple months now. Since I'm now retired I don't need to have the latest and greatest. Linux is just fine for me and the remaining development work I do. I guess I've always known I'd end up on Linux.

Hi I'm Darrel. I'm a generalist with 25 years experience in different technologies and languages, mostly backend focused. I am very comfortable working with legacy code as well as developing new applications/features. I am able to learn new technologies and systems and am equally comfortable as an IC or in technical leadership. I have worked with tech as varied as python2 to Apache Kafka.

I'd love to try something like this but my problem is that I routinely use 3 different computers throughout the day(Windows, Mac and Linux. Could this be used with git to keep things sync'd?

I love the 502 Hero mouse. I have the wired version on all my computers. Seems like it took me forever to find my perfect mouse.

I'm 65 and started a new job as a programmer a few weeks ago. I can relate to your brain elasticity issues for sure. I am really enjoying the new team and the work is fun but it does take its toll on my brain. By the end of a full day of coding or troubleshooting my brain feels... depleted. By friday I find it more difficult than in the past to quickly remember things.

I am doing well in the job and, due to a long career, have experience in a lot of the things they need. I am also still excited about learning new skills and toolsets and I'm in the right place for it.

But I do feel that the brain depletion, it feels like I have used something up - glycogen or something, is noticeable.

Any OTC recommendations would be appreciated.

As an aside, my grown daughter recently told me that to her numbers have always been gendered. I ran through them quickly and she matter of factly told me their gender. She doesn't work in tech but healthcare. She said it's always been like that.

I agree with this. In my experience working in the enterprise, Windows is less hassle and works just fine. The sweet spot for me is a Linux VM running on Windows. I get the best of both. WSL is good also.

I have been in unix since '90 and am most comfortable there for work but Windows fits into everything else in the office, as much as it can be done.

Mine was not dry. We brined it for 24 hours then cooked at 325 on the smoker. Came out moist and perfect. This is how I've done it for the last 3 years. Easiest way I've found to cook a turkey.

Which is probably going to be followed by a no-cost contract modification to switch out the name of personnel who couldn't possibly wait for a job as long as it takes the contract to get to approval/award. Just in my experience.

Hi all. I'm a 25+ year developer who is looking for my next challenge. I have broad experience and really enjoy making a difference to a team or company. I love the chance to learn new things.

This thread has really triggered something in me. I am 63 and recently retired from a gov job, which I hated for years. I just thought I hated my management, which I did. I did recognize symptoms the last couple years (sometimes I was physically unable to work while staring at the screen). My plan was to take a couple months off and then take a contract position doing development. I have been unable to even look earnestly since I secretly cannot stand the idea of going into another enterprise situation. It all seems to me to be utter bullshit. I realize that even though I have had burnout issues a couple times over the last 30 years, this is a major case of burnout that I am experiencing. I have always identified as a programmer, not just worked as a programmer. That was a mistake. I am currently unable to fully retire but now I can think about what else I should do. It is funny how profound this is to me right now all due to simply reading comments.

Yes, I feel trapped right now. I work for the federal government and have for the past 13 years, for a specific reason. That reason has been fulfilled and I deeply dislike my position but momentum is a strong pull. Also the situation is complicated, I feel, by my age. I'm 62 but not ready to retire. I love software and development and feel I have more years to work.

Windows has the most market share at ~85% total (Windows 10 is ~54%). If your target is enterprise users, then probably it's Windows but Mac users have been thought of as more willing to spend money on indie software they use.

That is a great point. I don't think I actually need the same deployed code to run everywhere. Common source would work. I do, however, feel like I need a language that is capable of producing an app that can be managed by a user, such as a UI for starting the backend process (UI or Windows service).

About your toilet; Does it smell at all? I've been interested for my travel trailer but the traditional RV community is very down on them. Seems like it would be more convenient than black tanks.

It sounds as if you like your current position and saving for early retirement is a great idea (from a 60's dev who can't retire soon). I agree with others here that technologies you fear you might miss out on could be learned through side projects.

Just my $.02 and I'm sure you'll make the correct decision, whatever that is, since you are thinking it through.
