i'd argue that almost everything done online (posting to twitter, writing a blog, and yes posting comments here, updating facebook) is done primarily to show off, garner attention, feel important, show people how gosh darn smart you are, etc.

this article's entire argument seems to be based around the idea that people only use twitter to broadcast mundane personal updates. that would get old very fast.

I'd argue that you are, and you have some extremely revealing hang-ups about sex and sexuality, as evidenced by your reaction to a freaking cartoon avatar ("make me, personally, uncomfortable about working there, or talking to anyone who worked there") and the "what will we tell our parents?" line.
how about you tell them "hey parents, i'm a grown-ass man capable of making my own decisions without being afraid of what my PARENTS will think!!"

our economy borrows against future real growth to finance itself, and that will never work in the long term - that real growth is physically constrained, but the debt is not.
just look at our national debt - our economy will never grow fast enough in real wealth terms to be able to pay back the debt that is accumulating much faster. debt is just a number on paper, without bound. growth has to contend with the real world.
The per-capita deficit isn't really that meaningful. $1000 a person isn't even that much - each citizen of the USA would have to pay $35,462.89 to cancel out the country's national debt. the reason it's not a problem is because our national debt is only like 75% of GDP. comparatively, California's deficit of $41 billion is only 2.4% of their GDP. it's a little different because California can't print money, but nothing to get all armageddon-y about. raise some taxes, decrease some spending, seize some swiss bank accounts and call it a day.
another point of comparison - we've already given way more than $41 billion to SINGLE corporations like AIG, not to mention bank of america, citi, fannie, freddie, etc. personally, i'd much rather bail out states than corporations. spending money on teachers - the horror!!
this makes me wonder about the backup systems of sites like tinyURL.
