This extension does a good job of removing them from your subscription feed. If you like me, guard your feed since you don't want to watch random stuff from the home page this is the only way to not totally clutter the feed with random shorts thumbnails. The very fact you can not disable shorts from your feed is outrageous, but obviously not surprising.

This will be my last reply. I am not accusing you personally for what is happening. I empathies with your situation and feel sorry for you. You are obviously doing what you can at the moment. What I was trying to convey was that the tone of your replies came of as pretty aggressive with a sense of injustice and victimhood. Which considering the situation didn't sit well with me.

My replies also comes from emotions and anger. It is probably unfair but being Russian I think you are going to have to find ways of dealing with these emotions from other people even if you feel it is unjust. Expressing empathy and humility would probably be helpful. Especially during the current time when bombs are still falling. I didn't get that feeling from you and therefore reacted the way I did, which was probably unnecessary. I wish you the best in dealing with this situation and hope that you are able to help Russia become a free & open society.

This whole situation is a tragedy. I don't know your life story and base my comments on the tone of your replies in this thread.

The world is going to hold the Russian population accountable to some degree for the war their government have started whether you think this is fair or not. And I think your attitude of aggression, victimhood and being wronged is not going to help you in the coming years. You would probably be better served with some humility, empathy and feel of responsibility even if you think it is unjust. The real victims are the Ukrainian civilians being bombed by your government at the moment. Not inconvenienced Russians who feel they are unjustly punished.

You have made three statements and not a single one express any sympathy with their situation. Only your own victimhood and one blanket statement you don't support the government. Their employees are being shelled with cluster bombs by your government as we speak.

I think it is time you face reality that the world is going to start to hold the Russian people accountable for their governments actions. I feel sympathy with the Russian people since many don't support this war or even their government but at some point they are going to have to get uncomfortable and take risks and stand up to the government.

Has nothing to do with killing B2B products. But I share your frustration and distrust in them for those two changes.

With the Google Maps API price change they demonstrated that they are very capable & willing of abusing their market position with shocking price hikes and with the GKE structural price change that they are no longer interested in the trust & business from small & medium size companies and unless you are enterprise size you can expect unpleasant price changes going forward.

App Maker is probably the worse on that killedbygoogle.com copy & paste list. Rest are B2B really?, the product evolved and got re-branded/consolidated or meh, was it really widely used anyway? Not a single one is a Google Cloud product.

I am no Google fanboy and get frustrated by a lot of things they do. But I think the Google kills everything argument for B2B products is getting tiresome. Especially in a Google Cloud Platform context.

Their actions on the Google Maps API absurd price hike and the recent GKE pricing structure change debacle is a whole other story and worth a lot of criticism.

This argument is getting old for B2B products. Would you mind sharing a list of Google Cloud Products or even just Business to Business related products that have been shut down?

Is there anyone but me who uses the premium article on medium.com as a filter for what is NOT worth my time?

I believe in the tech space the majority of readers who write in depth worth to read articles are not incentivised by a few dollars kickback from their hard work from medium.com. They often write it for personal profile enhancement or company blog marketing reasons and want to reach maximum audience and will keep it free for all.

The problem nowadays though is that medium.com is often able to trick them by making the article premium through deceptive ui even when that is not their intention. Just look at the googlecloud medium blog and you constantly see premium articles there which seems bizarre.

Every time Twitter comes up on HN people complain about missing reverse chronological order and hating on the liked by tweets feature. The old classic mode is one click away. Or am I in a weird long running A/B testing group still having access to this feature? I know the default mode is not what most people here like but is it really that hard to switch the display mode?

The day someone very high up the corporate ladder truly gets held responsible for this type of greed & negligence and will be put a way for a long prison sentence would be a good day for society. But I am not holding my breath...

But I hope that the CEO Dennis Muilenburg deep down understands he seriously fuxxed up real bad and every now and then is having a hard time falling a sleep in his $10M mansion knowing that he is ultimately responsible for hundreds of peoples unnecessary deaths due to his failed values as a leader.

Medium is done as a platform. If you still post content there you need to look for an alternative. It will not get any better. The management shows zero will to recognize the issues and to solve it. As soon as a company resorts to dark UI patterns (which medium has done for some time now) it is always downhill from there. Just in the last few weeks I have found 5+ regular authors that does NOT intend to post premium articles but have been tricked into doing so through a misleading/dark UI. Kind of a shame since it used to be quite good as discovery platform and it had promise but it is not anymore and I spend zero time on the platform apart from reading articles that I click from my Twitter feed.

I am not very concerned with this particular problem anymore since it will get a satisfactory solution due to its publicity.

What I am worried about and think should get more focus is other potential issues and corners that has been cut by the Boeing management. I have note read a single thing that Boeing has handled well in this massive disaster. This lack of judgement, short term profit seeking & cover up mentality is what media should spend more time on. It feels to me that they used up a lot of their trust capital to be allowed to perform any type of self-certification

Feel free to list the Google Cloud products that they have shut down as part of your argument. A better argument would be that you will do not trust them not to do a massive price increase when they become dominant enough with a product. Like they did with the Maps API.

Medium will be a better place without Hackernoon's clickbaity & shallow articles.

That being said, Medium has broken its platform with the aggressive roll out of premium. I guess it depends on which categories you are interested in but for knowledgeable and in-depth tech articles the best articles are not written by authors looking to earn a couple of dollars as a side gig.

They are written by people that wants to create a profile for themselves and/or as content marketing for a company. A star marker is rarely an indication of a very in depth article and is never written by a true expert in the subject. These authors just don't write with the incentive to make money from the content itself.

Medium.com used to be a create recommendation engine for quality & related content. Now the recommendations are garbage full of clickbaity & shallow articles with a star marker. And their search is terrible and lacking in basic features like time filtering/sorting. When you search now you get many 2-3 year old articles in fast changing tech subjects which are completely uninteresting. A great search and ability to build some feeds/channels is actually a feature I would pay for.

Maybe other niches creates different experiences but for tech it is not a platform worth exploring beyond the article you came for via a twitter link.

Unsurprising, lazy & coward reaction from Google.

That said, not that comments will be missed. Been using the extension "Distraction Free for YouTube" for the last couple of weeks which includes an option to remove all comments on all videos. Plus every other distraction. Been enjoying my YouTube time a lot more since i started using it. Amazingly clean & refreshing experience. Now I am on the hunt for similar extension for other parts of the web.

I used to like Medium as a discovery tool for interesting articles & ideas for authors to follow (on Medium or Twitter). But since the introduction of the premium model it is completely broken for this purpose. Now all you see (at least 80% of their recommendations) is premium articles on the Medium website.

For the topics that I am interested in (Data science, ML, Cloud, Programming etc) very close to 0% of the quality authors write to make a few pennies of the articles. They do it to enhance their own personal brand or as content marketing for the companies they work for. For this reason the premium article star marker works as a filter for things I am not willing click and invest time in reading since they are rarely written by experts with actual experience in the topics that I am interested in.

So when they skew their recommendation algorithm so hard towards the premium content it is just not worth it anymore and I never click around on the Medium.com website anymore. 90%+ of my clicks to articles comes from Twitter. I wish they built their business model to charge for features and not content since the path they are on is not going to work out. It is reducing the incentive for quality authors to publish on Medium since the exposure they will get through the recommendation algorithm is being smaller and smaller. Most people don't publish on Medium because it is difficult or expensive to run a wordpress blog. They do it because of it is a good way to find new readers of your content.
