@dang, why was this related post flagged (neither posted nor flagged by me, but of interest since RSS feeds are delayed in posting "live" news updates (e.g., BBC RSS is a delayed version of BBC-Live)):

The above marginalia.nu just surfaced the following very nice article for me, which neither Google nor Kagi returned in their top 10 search results for the same terms ('thaad aegis hwasong'):
https://nautilus.org/napsnet/napsnet-special-reports/the-rol...
(duckduckgo.com returned it as the 5th returned result (not bad)),
Thanks!
The professor has resigned after being placed on leave, FWIW:

But, for the Less-Wrong'ers, is it as scary as (gasp) Roko's Basilisk?!?
So, are you thinking more about laying people off recently? :)
The stock price dive at Meta is pretty clearly due to the $10B hit from Apple’s Do Not Track Feature.
Meta should make a free Android phone that allows tracking.
These headlines are such BS. The Russia-Ukraine war and energy crisis won’t be resolved in the next ten years? Give me a break.
Don’t plot the amount of wild mammalian biomass, plot the amount of totally mammalian biomass.
Doubt you’ll see a downward hockey stick in that case.
What makes a wild mammal more special than a domestic one?
TLDR; any mention of Tim Ferriss?
But "to any person", e.g., a CIA asset in the field might be exposed by a gmail user, thus threatening her/his life, thus pre-emptively disclose the gmailer's info to law enforcement?
Or imagine an idle threat is made off-hand in a private gmail, so pre-emptively disclose that threat to law enforcement?
In the sci-fi Minority Report scenario, Google could use AI language models on all gmail to make a judgment call on "emergent danger of serious physical injury". If I plan to go bunjee jumping with an unreliable provider, Google scans my gmail and tells law enforcement?!?
Self-hosted VPN for at least a narrower risk surface, in theory?
And a commissioner appointed by Trump, no less.
Ever heard of Japanese toy franchises? Sometimes foreign stuff sells better than domestic.
Cool! Can I easily post self-hosted photos? :)
Looking to economic growth only without any regard for unemployment is myopic.
Thanks for posting the heads-up re: Meta and Netflix; in the latter case I’m not surprised (or maybe they could just reduce the obscenely high salaries they overpay so they can feel superior to other members of FAANG, which doesn’t really fool anyone about their engineering prowess (they’re a content company, not an engineering/product/big-cloud company like the others, and everyone knows it). That would also allow them to get rid of this let-a-person-go-after-a-few-months-but-don’t-worry-there’s-warmth-and-respect BS.
Regarding your 2nd statement: “Other companies are cutting staff”; you mean in big tech already? Who?
TLDR: Money
Just curious what PDF annotation tool(s)/setup you use?
Did anyone expect a different outcome?
Thanks, HermanL and PradeepN, for sharing this migration story with HN!

"Despite all the hurdles in our migration path, we have already seen the benefits of running 8.0."
May I ask what are the main performance benefits you have measured/noticed?
"Orange/red badges are typically a big deal because it is very rare for people to last at Amazon past even 2-3 years, nevermind 5 years. "
Are some career ladder jumpers actually planning to leave anyway after 2-3 years so they can leverage compensation offers between FANG?
Click-bait headline, much?
Yes and that next thing will be tax cuts, thanks to the libertarians. #yesWeCan?
Are you referring to the Beyond Burger at Burger King or Beyond Meat in the grocery? I ate the former today and think it tastes pretty good (I don't miss the real-meat Whopper at all.)
P.S. I think your reference to radical candor is unnecessary; how does it further your 3 points? At the same time, thank you for pointing out this managerial meme; a tangential response since you brought it up: you do realize that the opposite of ruinous empathy is depraved indifference, right? How can we be sure that in critiquing Beyond Burger support as ruinously empathic, you aren't shielding your readers from valid concerns that choosing Real-Meat Whoppers over Beyond Meat Whoppers is immorally indifferent?
Needs to add `apropos`.
"Professors pointed to Assistant Professor of Computer Science Edward M. Clarke's decision to leave Harvard in June as an example of the University's inability to compete financially with other institutions. Clarke was offered an associate professorship here but has chosen to accept the same position at Carnegic Mellon University for considerably more money, professors said"
"Professors said junior faculty members make $18,000 a year but could have jobs in the private sector with salaries starting at $45,000."
