If you're tall and have the budget, I would recommend getting a 4-leg desk rather than a 2-leg one. I switched from a 2-leg Autonomous to a 4-leg model (DeskHaus Apex Pro) it's so much more stable, even when raised.

Not that you should go out of your way to be hurtful, but any genuinely useful advice/suggestions should be given without regard for emotion. You're at work, not a social club.

I agree that this could be useful advice and that you should _not_ hesitate to give it if you think it will be useful. However, I think it's rather extreme and short-sighted to say that such advice should be given entirely "without regard for emotion."

Here's the thing. Your co-workers are human. Humans have lizard brains, and sometimes get defensive. In order to maximize productivity and harmony in the workplace, you want to avoid that.

There's this thing called tact. Use it.

I'm not really sure what this would look like in practice. Perhaps this would only apply to new repositories, or maybe it will only be the default default. It has never been mandatory for the default branch to be called "master" -- it's just the default value from git and GitHub.

I suppose we will just need to wait and see what happens.

Even a SawStop won't prevent kickback, which is the most common type of table saw injury. However, it will prevent you from losing fingers, which was enough to convince me to buy one.

I'm pretty sure it's a real number in that it falls within ℝ (the set of all real numbers).

Not reading per se, but I've listened to Marketplace podcast [0] almost daily for years at this point, and I find it invaluable for economic news and interpretation -- especially now.

Also recommend Marketplace's podcast Make Me Smart [1], which is an informal deep dive on a single subject. It's nominally a weekly podcast, but they're now releasing a 10-minute daily version.

Finally, NPR's Planet Money [2] and their daily podcast The Indicator [3] are entertaining and education as well.

The study measures the effects of regular caffeine users:

Participants were invited to participate if they were between 18-35 years of age, consumed between 1-2 cups of caffeinated beverages per day at least 5 days a week, did not smoke, were native English speakers, and took no psychiatric medications or painkillers on a regular basis. [...] Participants were asked to abstain from any caffeinated or alcoholic beverages from 4 pm on the day prior to the session.

I recently listened to Michael Pollan's Caffeine [0], which was on Audible's free monthly audiobook list recently. He argues (and I'm inclined to agree) that if you are a daily caffeine consumer, your daily cup of coffee does less in the way of cognitive enhancement, and more in the way of getting you back to your baseline (i.e. preventing caffeine withdrawal).

With this in mind, I think the study could be improved by having subjects who started off completely off caffeine for a few weeks. That way, we'd be more certain that the control group isn't going through caffeine withdrawal, and that the effect of caffeine isn't decreased by tolerance.

Yep, small cars can do more than you give 'em credit for.

I considered getting a truck for some time, but ended up buying a 5x8 utility trailer. Sure, it's a little less convenient (and more bouncy) than a truck, and my 2009 Chevy Cobalt doesn't have a very high towing capacity, but for my purposes, the trailer gets the job done just fine.

I will happily continue to avoid car payments until the wheels fall off (which should be awhile, because I just replaced the bearings).

I'm glad to see the MIDI spec is available for download! It was my understanding that the only way to get the specification for MIDI 1.0 was to buy a hard copy of the spec, and that sales of the book were the only way the MIDI association made money. Looks like now both are free.

If you're a ham and want to do this, here's some more information on how to do so: [0]

Most of the astronauts are hams, which is pretty cool. As the page says, they're not always around the radio, so if you make contact, it's pretty lucky.

All you need is a small handheld VHF radio (since it's line-of-sight) and a decent antenna. In the US, you'd need a technician license (the lowest level).

There are also unmanned satellites that act basically like flying repeaters, so you can talk to other hams (on earth) much farther away than you'd normally be able to with VHF. More info here: [1]

If you're interested in becoming a ham, it's pretty easy (in the USA, at least) to get licensed [2] You have to take a test, but the study guide [3] contains all the questions on the test.

Disclosure: I'm a ham and have not actually contacted the ISS. But I think it's cool.

Existing satellite ISPs have their satellites stationed in geosynchronous orbit, which is like 35,000 km above sea level. This allows them to send up fewer satellites, since they have a line of sight to more of the Earth's surface. However, that distance that results in those high propagation delays.

SpaceX (et al) have a different strategy. They are instead sending satellites to Low Earth Orbit, so they'll be about 500 km above sea level. As a result, the propagation delay will not be nearly as bad. Perhaps under 50 ms, compared to the 600 ms I've seen on geosynchronous satellite internet.

At that low altitude, you need a lot more satellites (because each satellite can only "see" a small-ish area of the earth), so they need to send a swarm of those satellites. This is now possible because satellites are much smaller and cheaper than they used to be.

Will fiber blow it out of the water? Yes. Will The phone company run a fiber line out to my house for less than thousands of dollars? No. Would they do it if there's some competition from above? Maybe so.

You better believe it! EAS is no joke, and FCC is right to take a hard line.

Not very many people know that tone contains data. (It's pretty interesting, really; see wiki link below.)

Broadcasters have an EAS box that listens for alert tones on other frequencies and repeats it over the broadcast frequency (and others may listen, etc). Among other things, the data in the tone affects how far it propagates, so if someone plays a tone over the air that's set to propagate nationwide, it's kind of a problem.

This isn't the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last.
