Being liberal doesn't mean that you block everything that the other side is doing. It's also about being open and accepting to others and their views. Shopify did the right thing here.

While this sounds like a good idea and will probably do well, it also centralizes more critical information and access to one for-profit company and product.

I really wish that we as a community would spend more effort towards better, decentralized systems.

If anyone has a good background, what exactly does Joyent have that is so valuable?

It seems that NodeJS has moved out of Joyent. They have hosted container support that seems to run on solaris, which seems interesting, but a bit too much of buzz-wordy from their website.

I am not very familiar with this, so will be great if someone can explain a little bit. I read the comments around orchestration, but am more interested in Joyent's value proposition.

I've been an AMEX user since 2002. I have a MasterCard also, and use it where AMEX is not accepted. However, I prefer using AMEX because:

1. It has a rock solid dispute system. I've disputed charges where the merchant didn't deliver on promise and AMEX took really good care of it. Same thing with a Visa card didn't go very well. You can do everything off the AMEX website and over email. With others, you have to call them and deal with lousy customer support.

2. They have a really good website and overall user experience. Its a pleasure to go to the website to see the charges, or to get a well laid out annual spending report. Their mobile app is also the best as compared to others.

3. They have stellar customer service. I rarely need to call them, but when I do, the wait times are in seconds.

4. They support mobile payments - Its the first one to be on Samsung Pay and I happen to have a Note 5.

FWIW, I just have the "American Express Blue Cashback" card, which no annual fees.

Hello, World 11 years ago

I agree with the sentiment, but how's he going to pay the bills for rent, school, car, etc? A lot of people work on jobs they don't like to pay bills. Is he not going to have a place to stay? May be his girlfriend has enough income that he can pursue hobbies while she works A 'proper' job? There is a minimum you need to make to live a comfortable life and not rely on government to help ends meet.

Beats headphones have very heavy Bass, a little bit overpowered Treble, and low Mids. This is basically what you get if you try to make a cheap headphones and add a lot of bass on it. This makes them fun for HipHop but sucks for everything else, specially anything with vocals.

They are, however, pretty good looking (imho), sturdy and extremely comfortable. They have also become (amongst non-geeks) the go-to headphones if you want something good as they don't have time to research the differences between HD598 and HD650.

If you buy a good pair of headphones that are balanced (eg. Sennheiser HD598), you can use a equalizer on your computer to make them sound just like Beats.

Basically, you can make Sennheisers sound like Beats, but you can't make Beats sound like Senheisers.

Video Mirchi - Bollywood music videos

http://videomirchi.com

Website and android application. It's the best way to listen to indian music videos without getting lost in youtube.

Launched about 1.5 years ago and has been growing steadily since. It's fully automated and new songs get automatically added so I don't have to spend a lot of time on it. I do keep updating the app every now and then.

Employee Equity 12 years ago

Great article. One thing that he forgets to mention is to let employees "Pre Exercise" the options.

For a very young startup (even for Series A), the shares are still worth pennies per share, and letting employees pre-exercise the shares not only saves them from AMT but also lets the long term capital gains kick-in sooner.

Only a few startups that I've seen do this, and its really effective specially for employees.

Nobody mentioned tinytinyrss - I found it to be the best rss reader as a google reader alternative.

Its open source and also has an android app that rocks.

I have used AMEX since the last 9 years, precisely for things like these. They are REALLY good at processing disputes and chargebacks, and in the last 9 years, there has never been a time when I 'lost' a claim against such fraudulent charges (I've had around 5 such claims).

On the other hand, both Visa and Mastercard are pretty much useless to 'protect' you against charges like these.

I am the founder of http://theicebreak.com

We have built our app ( Icebreak for Couples - http://itunes.apple.com/app/id476063944 ) using Titanium.

When we started building it, Titanium was very very buggy. It has since improved, but still has a lot of really basic stuff that is broken. Their forums have a lot of questions that have been unanswered for over an year.

Our reason for picking Titanium was basically to have an app that is just like a native app on both iPhone and Android without writing the code twice.

We have found out that porting a Titanium app to Android is taking a ton of effort, lot more than we originally thought. I would be curious to hear what the RAVN team has to say regarding their Android version.

Its just not as cross-platform as we thought :(. I would be extremely careful before picking it in the future.

Basically, if you build native apps:

Native App: iPhone=1X, Android=1X. If you want both Android and iPhone: 2X

Titanium App: iPhone=2X,Porting to Android: 0.7X. Total effort: 2.7X

Native Wins.

We had a simple dashboard for tracking key metrics, but soon needed reports like retention breakdown by user.

It literally took is 1.5 days to get this whole thing up and running, and saved countless amount of time in the future trying to analyze the usage.
