My partner recently applied to quite a few extremely prestigious graduate programs. We're not married and she made $16,000 dollars last year. She's won several national competitions in her field. The main deciding factor for her final choice was the price. It's just not worth it to go into six figures or more worth of debt for a degree.

So the whole mechanism of capitalism is based on the fact that there are haves, and have-nots, albeit with freedom to move upward. The system literally does not work with everyone being a "have", if that happens, the newly minted "haves" just bring down the existing "haves" into a new class of "have-nots". That's essentially what's happened, the lowest of the "have-nots" have risen, which has led to everything being more expensive for the preexisting "haves".

Yeah, I was really expecting them to just continue the partnership that Apple announced when the iPhone 16/iOS 18 came out, but I suppose it's been pretty much radio silence on both fronts since then. Although the established stability and good enough-ness that Google offers with Gemini are probably more than enough reason for Apple to pivot to them as a model supplier instead.

Personally, I don't agree with this proposal. While yes, I agree, that bare excepts are often a source of bugs, I don't think it should be the language's responsibility to nanny the programmer on such things. To me, this seems to only reduce the functionality of the language. If explicit exception handling is necessary, let the programmer make that decision.

First thing that came to mind. I remember in school at least 10 years ago we used it because a teacher liked it. Most of us just used it as a Powerpoint alternative, but a few kids definitely harnessed the extra power available over a generic slideshow. I remember being really impressed at the creative presentations a few people made with it. Fun times.
I think the point is that this person has spent so much time experiencing this phenomenon on the internet, that the effects are bleeding into reality.

The sheer functionality of git is amazing. The number of times I have encountered a new situation and used a previously unknown (to me) feature, or (equally as impressive) been able to harness the flexibility of the software to wrangle some strange edge case are innumerable. All that while also being lightning fast.

Well yes, it makes sense that one could just solve this problem however they choose, whether that be through the programming language of their choice or pen and paper. The whole point of the article is to purposefully restrict the use of external tools and see if it can be done wholly within the native SQL environment.
It seems like a lot of CS majors find compilers to be the hardest course of the degree, indeed, it was the capstone for my degree. I found it to be quite fun and not particularly intensive once you wrapped your head around each new concept. I found CS Theory and Operating Systems to be much more difficult material, although both of those courses had less actual work.
This seems similar to the ridiculous questions members of the US Congress asked Google and Facebook employees a few years ago. Law makers (particularly the older, less technologically inclined) tend to view things through the worst possible lens because they lack the knowledge required to understand the inherent value of technologies such as encryption.
I think it's possible to be invested in the performance and improvement of the company you work for without being personally invested in the exact product you're helping to develop.
Who is this article for exactly? It starts off by trying to relate to the reader by presenting the point about learning a new programming language, but then goes on to explain one of the most fundamental concepts of computing, as if the reader is a complete novice. I would imagine that nearly every person with programming experience, whether that be formal or not, would have at least some familiarity with binary representation and bitwise operations.
I agree, I don't tend to think they are quite as dangerous as GOTOs have proven to be, but I do understand the criticism. The example provided about their use in interrupt handlers is of particular relevance.
I don't really understand how this is any different from any other social media platform besides the entity your data is being sent back to. Is the Chinese government really any worse than Google, Meta, etc.? I think if you really feel passionately about this specific instance, then you should also feel the same passion about any other social media platform that collects your data and does with it what they please.
