US shutting down visa waiver for EU would be dumb as the Consulates are already swamped and absolutely cannot handle that level of B1/B2 visa applications (the wait times are already 1 year+ around the world).

This would hurt US travel and tourism.

Europeans aren't going to riot if they lose visa waiver to US.

So American business suffers, EU looks strong standing up for privacy against the bully, and EU can still offer visa waiver to inbound Americans. Call their bluff.

you're an ass. my child is a toddler. they need to be exploring and interacting with other children, in person, playing, learning and receiving stimuli, not locked at home staring at screens.

Sounds to me they likely don't have children. Even one week at home for my kid is damaging let alone a year. The kids weren't spreading covid to teachers. Teachers could have worn respirators and been fine.

Governments should have kept covid out but harming children in this way to make up for disastrous decisions and behaviours of adults is unacceptable.

It's easy to romanticise the early days of the internet but seeing this brought a tinge of depression.

We are back in offices in Sydney for a while now. I think Singapore too. Most flexibly and tech the slowest to return.

We check in with a govt app and QR codes in NSW and all of Australia does this and venues confirm before letting you in. It's integrated into the Service NSW app so I don't need a separate one. Same app where my digital drivers licence is. No paper. In fact I don't carry a wallet here anymore because public transport is with NFC - Apple pay.

We had a 5% decline in suicide this year in Sydney. Although it wasn’t a very hard or long lockdown. The hypothesis is that increased welfare payments may be the reason but personally I believe the slow down/pause to what was a hectic pace of life, and being at home with family more contributed.

I keep saying this about the silly island argument. It's not like the virus is coming into the US via Mexico and Canada. And domestic travel was halted with state border closures. The key is slowing movement. It's been perplexing watching Americans proudly travel and holiday, even internationally, during all this.

It's probably not the office people dislike, it's the commute. If your office was next door to your house and all your colleagues were there you wouldn't go? You could come back for lunch and go back and forth as needed.

WTF is going on here? This man was followed into his condo by a man dressed in a black suit and a mask carrying an electric saw. That man killed him and was in the process of cutting his body into parts. Is this a random serial killer or some sort of hit organized against him? Disgruntled investor? I think his Nigeria motorcycle sharing startup was not doing well during COVID, but what is the motive behind someone hiring a professional to have him killed?

Right people always bring up that quote "nobody on their deathbed wished they worked more." But how many people on their deathbed regret a life passed in mediocrity, without at least attempting to master or excel at something; maybe some do wish they worked harder so they could have provided more for their children, etc.

Not possible for me. The behaviour of others around me on the train stresses me out immensely, especially sneezing and coughing (and that was pre-COVID), listening to music or phone calls on speakerphone on crowded trains, stupid conversations, etc.

Further my time is valuable, not in a monetary sense, but when you have a child at home, every minute away counts and there is no value to spending 90 minutes a day on a train.

Why do you struggle with staying home so much? What exactly are you missing? You can socialise at home, and maintain distance easily. You can still do outdoor activities. It's basically concerts, sporting events, restaurants and bars? Are these really that important to you? Americans live on average in the largest homes in the world, so there should be no real problem with this.

These things are NOT the entire economy, and large parts of the economy will continue with people avoiding these types of enviornments.

Yes this appears to be a loophole, wherein anyone in the US on June 24 who has a valid nonimmigrant visa (could be a tourist or student visa) is able to obtain a visa label in a banned category at a US Consulate.

That said whether DOS interprets it that way is another story.

He should apply for B2 then change status to H1B once in the US using the H1B petition. They may deny it but... Worth it.

Upon renewal even the most trivial thing can be used with no transparency or accountability or review and keep you out of the country for life. Bam. Can't get back home, stuck in India, everything left behind. That's it. I know because I've had several clients lives ruined by thus lunacy.

what you are talking about would require a rule-making process and/or statutory change. they are going to try that, but it will take longer and will be subject to judicial review.

AC21 lets you change employers without waiting for the petition to be approved. that's statutory. much harder to change as it would require Congress.

eventually, your visa label will expire. after that, if you need to travel overseas, you will need a new visa label and under this proposed exec order, if it's still active you will not be able to return. so you will have to avoid overseas travel entirely until the ban is lifted.
