Not the poster on the Xfinity forum, but thought the analysis would be interesting for HN (Assume many here fall into the bucket of using their own modems.) Came across this after my own internet connection started dropping 20+ times per day past few weeks. Comcast Tech said everything looks good on my connection and my best bet is just to buy a new modem and see if it fixed it.

So that’s what I used to think (Price hiding to avoid sticker shock) But now I am convinced it’s a little bit the price point but more when there is variability in the pricing, and the pricing is done by a sales team that has flexibility on what they charge you (these companies always will ask for a budget and tailor the quote to what they can squeeze)

I take it as a sign that when they do give you a quote, it’s up for negotiation and you should never agree to the first number presented.

I switched to the Android Headspace app recently and the juxtaposition of what they're trying to achieve (meditation / mindfulness and being in the moment) with the onslaught of unasked-for notifications, sometimes when I was already asleep, was jarring. They should be a poster boy for Calm Technology, but Tech just can't seem to help itself.

There's an interesting study on gender differences in competitiveness in a patriarchal vs. matrilineal society ( http://management.ucsd.edu/faculty/directory/gneezy/pub/docs... )

The gist of it being that in the former males are much more competitive, and in the latter, females are. While there are of course real physiological differences between men and women, don't discount out of hand the effect culture has as well.

There don't need to be "meetings where men gather to conspire to keep women down" for a society to have a significant biasing effect.

Isn't this solved by just requiring the CSRF token on any JS get requests? (In fact, isn't this just a cross-site request forgery with a different verb than we're used to?)

I know it's only generally checked on posts, but turning it on for any xhr calls seems like it would solve any potential data leakage.

I love the submitter's article, but I have to agree - while the thesis is similar, it's told from such a different viewpoint that I wouldn't have even made a connection between the two.

I got one of these, it was brutal.

Switching cards was something like a 30 second process, which meant that instead of taking a card out, you had to open up the app, wait for it to load, wait an extra 10 seconds for it to connect to the Geode, then use the painfully-slow app. All to not carry a card in your wallet.

And on top of it - the two times I tried it at restaurants the card itself didn't work.

Lately Microsoft complains all the time that they are fully standards compliant, but when it comes down to it, I always end up having to special case IE so it never really feels that way.

The fallacy with this argument is that if everyone behaved if you did there would be no games. If this stuff is "free" it's the tragedy of the commons http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons - except in this case it's developer resources that are "common" and will be depleted as there wouldn't be money to pay for them.

I think at this point everyone understands that there's piracy out there and it's not going away. The thing that irks me is the moral argument like yours (provided it's not a troll, I can't be sure) - I just wish people would admit that they're taking something for free that they shouldn't - no one is saying "trust me - you'll like it," don't give me that "after I evaluate" stuff - you can read dozens of reviews and watch full play-through movies on Youtube. I wish people would just admit that they are scumbags.

Extremely tiny scumbags in the grand scheme of things - less than folks taking a candybar from a corner store as digital goods, as you noted, are freely copyable without cost, but scumbags nonetheless as you are the leeches that make things worse for folks willing to pay for stuff. If you're a student and have no cash but want to play every game that comes out, you're probably going to pirate, but don't create this entire moral structure of justification to compensate for your being a freeloader. Just accept a the tiniest twinge of moral responsibility as you play your free game and become a better person down the road.

As someone who enjoys playing large-scale single player games on PC - Skyrim and the like - I'm upset because more and more developer resources are going to switch to F2P and "always online" games because those are the only ones that "beat" piracy and there are going to be less titles out for the PC and more that just are on console the next generation of locked-down consoles.

This is something that happened today (April 18th) - this is not five days of waiting around for money to free up. This is a gripe because the author triggered ever fraud alarm in the book and they have not responded fast enough.

I'd lean towards the "give them a little bit a of break" - yes it sucks he had to provide additional documentation and they haven't sorted it out yet, but no business could allow anonymous folks on the web to sign up and move 5 figures of cash providing only publicly available information as documentation.

If instead of showing up at my door I got a note that said you need to come down to the post office during business hours and pick up your package and bring an extra $1.44, I'd actually be kinda put out.

This was a mistake by the shipper for mis-weighing the package (as they note in the feedback "This has happened alot from USPS lately." - maybe they need to get themselves a new scale) it should get negative feedback, and if this is the tactic they take to get rid of that negative feedback, then that seller shouldn't be selling.

I'm a little bit in line with the other folks - if you grant access to a photo, the entirety of that Photo (exif data et al) should be available to the app.

Thanks, I really appreciate the comment - I wrote it as a parable and only added the context link after my father emailed me in a tiff asking if it was autobiographical and I had secretly been bullied in high-school.

The goal was to simplify the discussion and throw some culpability on the reader to make them a little uncomfortable, but as I only usually write about tech stuff this was new ground for me and I had no idea if people would "get" the intent or if it would just feel like a one-sided condemnation.

No problem - I'm been sitting on the site and the Engine since October (building stuff with it instead of finishing it) - so this is a good kick in the butt to polish that sucker up.

Given the popularity of video games in American life it just seems odd that we haven't seen a massive spike in crime given the number of mass murder simulators we've been exposing our young'uns to since arcades became popular in the late 70's.

WebRTC allows for general UDP packets (in the spec at least - haven't tried it in Chrome stable) so hopefully this will be a workable solution as it gets more support.

Torque did build and run (In-game editor an all) on Linux back in the day, although support was always iffy (not sure if that's pre-Torque3D or not) - maybe open-sourcing will bring out some Linux hackers to shore that back up.

How is this different than any other commercial software library - once you have a copy, what prevents you from reselling it illegally?

While HTML5 games can be easily copied wholesale somewhere else (as can Flash SWF files generally) - the code is usually minified and not terribly useful to try to do development on.

I worried that might be the case - I just didn't get a chance to integrate the Twilio.JS API which would help solve that problem as it would all happen in-browser, but I wanted to see if anyone would even be interested first.
