Even in the Bay Area, a Home is still 5-6X annual income of a typical software engineer. In India, it is more like 10-15X.

I feel one of the real issues is incentivizing publicly traded companies to beat pressure from Wall street to keep cutting costs and workers be damned attitude. It might be worthwhile to experiment $30 per hour wages for all publicly listed and big companies, including temp workers. Overall it is better for someone to work 4h at $30 instead of 8h at $15.

This looks like an iPad / tablet charging stand with speakers and better mic -- which there are plenty of in the market. You can get one of these for $20 (or $99 if Apple makes it!). Our team runs _the_ largest Go middleware. Checking in external dependencies into your repo scales - you don't want 200+ users hitting Github every 10 minutes, when you can hit the local Git repo on a 10Gbps n/w. Also, using GOPATH with a simple Makefile is pretty much all you need -- unless you don't grok Makefiles. But whatever floats your boat and as usual the latest hotness sells.

Thanks for working in Firefox. It is so much better than where it was whe Chrome first shipped and I switched to Firefox (and also to DDG thanks to AMP). There are two issue that bug me a lot and I use FF on Mac. The back swipe behavior is not so great and enabling browser.snapshots.limit is buggy. I feel it is also slower rendering and scrolling.

This seems to be cultural at Google. Apart from this, there are many instances that I've been hit by their "we know best, just deal with it" mentality. AMP debacle comes to mind.

As a user, I can't stand amp -- issues are 1.) no link to original site. 2.) top banner plague 3.) weird smooth scrolling that messes with my muscle memory.

There are two workarounds to avoid amp all together: 1.) use DDG and prefix all queries with "!g" or 2.) visit encrypted.google.com that does not use amp.

Given that I tend to stay on a page for 2-10 minutes, shaving off 1sec is less than 0.8% improvement. This is not worth it given the horrible drawbacks and UX.

I'd say AI is real when it can do everything my 4yr old son can understand and do. I used to think this is a low bar, But going by how slow and painful the progress has been, I'm not hopeful it will happen even in my son's lifetime :(

The article is well written but takes a little anti-social view of how things come to be. The private industry is doing a great job of procuring, manufacturing and delivering of consumer goods at affordable prices. However many of these inventions were either discovered by scientist and inventors who either pursued it for purely intellectual reasons or were funded by public money by grants. For example, the Darpa grants were the main cause for the internet today. The article does a great disservice by not giving this aspect its rightful due.

This is an awesome product and a big disruptor. Has anyone done the math on the revenues and profitability for Tesla? On the one hand it will sell for more than the typical 10-20K roof job. But then it is supposed to last 50years. What are the chances that Tesla will even be around in 50years?

Apple has its own OS, compilers, IDE, 2+ languages, various frameworks etc. This is more than what Google, more importantly used a lot by people. But yeah it just a hardware company.

For all the Apple stockholders, it is ethical to follow the rule and reduce taxes. For all the handme-something EU bums it is not.

Why do so many HN folks feel that Google is the savior here? The reality is that both oracle and Google are for-profit companies and hence both are greedy. Talk to any old Sun employee and they will tell you how Google came and saw and took whatever they could, when they could have legally licensed j2me for a pittance. Thanks to that stupidity, they are now paying the lawyers. On a separate note, more I think of it, Page/Brin getting out of the way and letting sane adults run sub-divisions is the best thing to happen to Google.

That only works when the competitor products are better than what Apple makes. The competing products are mediocre at best and more over, they just don't integrate like the way Apple products do.

I think most of you guys are missing a crucial thing here -- how decisions get made. Facebook had two options: 1.) Rewrite all the PHP code in Java/Ruby/C++/whatever 2.) Write HHVM/Hack/etc to transparently convert the existing PHP code.

Option #2 ended up getting a lot of publicity for the engineers. If they chose option #1, not only is it a lot of hard boring and possibly error prone work, there is no chance for any of the engineers to get the type of publicity they are currently getting. All in all, engineers tend to work on whatever will make them get noticed, not necessarily the better technical choice nor what is in the best interest of the company... this is especially true in companies like Facebook and Google where there are a lot of very smart engineers doing relatively mundane work. So there you have it Hack/HHVM are all just publicity stunts, the more you feed it, the happier their PR gets.
