I keep hoping interoperability becomes something the European Commission decides to tackle. I can't see the US ever doing anything about this.

I live in Austin and there's a pretty good station (I think it's actually a group of stations across Texas) called Sun Radio. I pretty much only listen in the car, but they are usually playing something I'm interested in.

Are there any serious legislative efforts to fix the ebook market? I know getting rid of DRM entirely isn't likely to happen, but at this point I'd be happy with just vendor-neutral DRM.

People here use meaningless titles all the time. That somebody calls themselves an artist shouldn't raise eyebrows anymore than somebody calling themselves a software engineer.

You've just described the media experience. When I was a kid I spent so much time just flipping through channels. The same activity today is a vastly different and inferior experience. Modern televisions take forever to change channels.

For now. I wonder if we will ever get to the point where the computer starts doing mathematics that we just can't understand. Surely there must be some limit to what we can understand (like how a gorilla will never understand prime numbers, there are probably limits to our intelligence as well).

"Content" is giving in to the idea that what you make only has value because it can fill some hole between ads in somebody else's CMS. What it is doesn't matter, it's just content. Meh.

Maybe. Or alternative could be to use the words you used in your first sentence: writer, photographer, filmmaker.

If you talk about your work using deflationary words like content then that could affect how you think about it and present it. Do yourself a favor and use grand words because I bet it's important to you.

High school, central Texas, public school. I think the idea was to teach appropriate use of devices.

My kids were basically required to have a phone for school. In theory they could use a laptop for everything but in practice it was assumed you had a phone.

They were supposed to use the calendar for assignments (and were given time to use the calendar), the teacher would tell them to take a picture of the white board with their homework assignment on it, and they used some private app (don't know the name of it) for messaging the teacher.

This was a few years ago though, so maybe now the tide has turned?

The knowledge could be contained in a book yet we would never say a book can drive a car.

I know how a violin works yet I would never claim to know how to play violin and if you put one in my hands it would become painfully clear that I know almost nothing about violins other than some trivia.

Not sure if the numbers are correct, but it looks like the number of Russians killed in Ukraine is about the same as the number of Americans killed in WW2. Does it matter if the state uses a carrot or stick to send a generation off to die?

These may be rookie numbers for Russia, but it's still significant.

I learned to drive in a drivers ed course at school in tenth grade.

There's also home ec, wood shop, metal shop, auto shop, sculpture, choir, theater arts, marching band, phys ed.

Elisp::Emacs as AutoLISP::AutoCAD. AutoLISP was my first introduction to Lisp-style language. When I first started using it (1987) for macros in AutoCAD, I really had no idea what Lisp was. It was just a fun and easy way to automate AutoCAD.

I was trying not to. I thought saying "it might sound better to you" would make it clear that it's a subjective matter of taste.

Some people still use a PS1 for playing CDs. They came with a DAC that some people love.

I had some CDs that I couldn't get an accurate rip from so I took them to a used games store and they polished them for $1 each and all but one I was able to rip them all perfectly. I think the one that continued to fail must have had a flaw on the label side.

I've been looking for a retro-style case. There are companies that make cases that look like 90's towers (Silverstone), but I'm hoping to find something more like a PS/2 Model 30 (or any PS/2 - so many beautiful designs) or Amiga 1000. Something I can put under my monitor.

When I was buying my last car, I was searching for something with a CD player option. Turns out there are no new cars with CD players and the last manufacturer to offer one was Lexus in 2022.

I ripped my collection to my phone and I use CarPlay and it works well enough. But still if I could, I'd buy a car with a CD player.

My next car might be a Slate truck because they supposedly support single or double DIN radios and there has to be an aftermarket option that would work.

The tactile experience is one thing, but if you are bothered by the heavy use of compression on CDs (the loudness wars), then vinyl might sound better to you.

Now that people aren't listening to CDs in the car, it would be amazing to see some remasters of CDs with the dynamic compression dialed back a bit.

Sadly, the future might be phone gaming. The mobile gaming market is as big as the console and PC markets combined.

That's a pretty harsh take.

But it's fun to mod the car and you get to drive around in an art project. My dad did basically the same thing during the 1950's and 60's hot rod culture. This is more or less what his car looked like:

He never had a lot of money to spend on it but he did have access to car parts and was a gifted mechanic. One of my favorite memories was going out for a ride in that thing in the summer with him and I would ask him to go faster and he would wind it up to about 120 mph for a few miles and it was so exciting (and, in retrospect, a bad idea). He would tell me he had to do that occasionally to get the carbon out. :)
