A sizeable group of us don’t have a meaningful second place either anymore. I work remote and there is really no social aspect to it in any meaningful sense, just pointless meetings and an endless Jira backlog. My home and my work are one and the same.

In the last three years the closest I came to a viable third place was VRChat, it was the best social experience I’ve ever had. I don’t think I need to say much more about that, it speaks for itself.

People are increasingly angry and disillusioned with how society is, or isn’t working. It’s not really a surprise there’s been an increase in such opinions and thus posts when one looks at the general state of things.

My issue with the TLS requirement is the artificial limit it places on systems which can access Gemini. It's blocks small systems, anything really DIY, vintage computers, etc.

Gemini could have a really cool niche as a protocol which supports a lot of weird and wonderful systems, allowing them to be more useful and fostering a community interested in that stuff, but the TLS requirement completely prevents that.

I'd love to write a Gemini client for System 6 for example, but that just isn't feasible.

I guess my problem is partly that Gemini isn't useful to me, but even more broadly I don't understand who it's really useful for at all.

My main issue with Gemini remains the hard requirement of TLS. It makes it useless in a bunch of situations where it could actually excel.

I guess ultimately it doesn’t matter, Gopher has more content, more services, and more users.

I wasn’t aware of this, but I’m glad I am now. If that’s the case it’s time to look elsewhere or self host, VC funds and acquisitions are rarely good for users so I’ll assume the worst.

I still see personal websites that are almost unreadable on small phones, for instance.

My personal website is like that and I’ve made no effort to improve the phone experience. I really don’t care if phone users have access or not, on every other device it looks fine.

It’s a personal website, if it looks good on my machine that’s enough for me.

I love them, but don’t think they’ve held up over time. This is subjective, but they just don’t feel right on modern, wide, high resolution displays.

The acceleration always feels wrong and UI elements have gotten smaller or nearly vanished. Trying to position a trackpoint to resize a window is maddening these days.

Back on the old Toshiba Satellites in the Win 9x days though? They felt just right, a solution that truly fit the computer and UI of the era.

That all said I still prefer them over virtually every touchpad.

Yes, but it’s probably not a landline in the way most people think. Almost all those services use voip backends now with only the last mile being copper.

Due to where I live I have to maintain a wired phone as I can’t get a reliable cell signal.

I just have a voip phone adapter connected to a random old phone and I use voip.ms for the actual service. It costs effectively nothing to run. It’s not a landline in the transitional sense, but those largely don’t exist anymore.

Fair enough, I wasn’t aware they’d made so much progress. I was under the impression it was still a proof of concept and people were glossing over a lot of issues.

I guess that’s the benefit of only having to target a very small amount of hardware, it saves time for improving other things.

I remember preferring Linux on PPC to Linux on intel laptops years ago. Apple PPC laptops tended to “just work” with Linux in my experience.

How much does sleekness actually matter day to day? Both vendors offer very nice hardware these days, it’s not the bad days mid-00s anymore.

There are irredeemable places, and places that just don’t work for an individual. They key is knowing when it’s a problem instead of just running somewhere random and hoping it’ll fix all your issues.

Personally? I feel way better in sunny, dry climates. My mood improves a ton and I legitimately feel healthier. Right now I live in the exact opposite and I don’t like it.

I’ll never be overly critical of anyone’s computing choices, but this just seems like the worst of both worlds to me unless you specifically want to tinker with Apple-ARM Linux.

Why not Linux on much better supported hardware from Lenovo or Dell? It just doesn’t make sense to me to buy such an expensive computer only to remove a core part of the package, Mac OS.

I have no kids and I have no relationships. I don’t manage people though work, though they’d like me more involved in a bunch of stuff. All I have is the cat and a house and the house actually brought me some peace of mind.

The idea of fathering a child is legitimate nightmare fuel for me. I already feel trapped as it is, though thankfully there’s no risk of it happening.

This honestly isn’t helpful, it’s part of why I feel so guilty complaining, someone always has it worse.

Thankfully I learned years ago this doesn’t work and got past this mindset. Changing circumstances has never significantly improved things for any length of time.

Tl;dr If you value your freedom to choose your own path don’t get married or have children.

The time horizon is long, very long. I may make the most I ever have, but it’s a paltry sum compared to most HNers.

One way or another I will leave, it remains to be seen what that will actually mean. For now all I can do is keep putting money away and praying I get lucky.

Why not? That sort of thing isn't helpful or thought provoking for many of us. On the other hand many will find it thought provoking in extremely negative ways.

Most people do not like to think about their impending doom on this hellish planet.

I seriously wish people on HN and more broadly would stop suggesting drugs and tripping out so often as a solution to any depression or existential dread.

I get it's one of several suggestions you made, but it's the most dangerous suggestion of all of them. People end up seriously harmed by this stuff, it's not to be taken lightly.
