Brick and mortar retailers?
Developing software requires high level/architecture type decisions that you mention in your first paragraph. It also requires solving many small fizz-buzz size subtasks, which are necessary and demonstrate competency.
A marathon runner doesn't need a stellar 100 yard dash time, but they should at least be able to jog 100 yards.
Users care about value add, not features. Remember this when selling and planning development!
This is a big assumption. There are levels where the economics don't work out for drivers and riders are willing to pay - it remains to be seen whether are not Uber is profitable at these levels.
https://docs.mongodb.com/manual/security/ is a good start(not being glib).

I loved Threes, 2048 and this is just as great - thanks!
However, one thing that I dislike about this game(and something that could be changed in the next version or permutation) is that gameplay is TIME based instead of TURN based. It makes the game less about strategy and more about being quick with your mouse. It also makes the game less appealing as a background task and something to stop and come back to; ie something to do while waiting for something to cook or during television commercials.

The numbers are skewed because the car ownership costs are based on national averages(lower than LA averages, presumably).
I think any Angeleno would kill to pay the national average for fuel costs and commute 25.2 miles in 25 minutes.

I'm not sure if this is feasible and certainly it would be more of a process than 'building some kind of dam'. A few reasons:
- The bridge spans 2700m and the channel is 350+ feet deep in some spots. For scale, the Three Gorges Dam is 2300m long
- Sea levels will rise so incrementally that a massive public works project might seem unnecessary or hard to get support for
- Shipping traffic needs to be able to pass through to get to the port of Oakland, Richmond, Stockton, etc...

Ruby Koans, from the Github repo:
"The Ruby Koans walk you along the path to enlightenment in order to learn Ruby. The goal is to learn the Ruby language, syntax, structure, and some common functions and libraries. We also teach you culture by basing the koans on tests. Testing is not just something we pay lip service to, but something we live. Testing is essential in your quest to learn and do great things in Ruby."
And saved people countless hours in waiting for their classifieds to get printed and effort in figuring out spacing and setting up their ads.
A few days ago, I started working on a Rails based CMS:
https://github.com/cmpolis/zencms
I've been working with a design company for a while and haven't been satisfied with the CMS's that we have been using, mostly Wordpress. I feel like there's a better way to do it, so I'm hacking!
Congrats to the SeatGreek team! I have used the web and iPhone apps a bunch of times and have had great experiences with them.
I particularly like SeatGeek because they are providing a service that is:
* valuable(in terms of $) by making it easy to find the best seats at the best price and presenting an OTD price
* visually interesting with an intuitive and robust UI
Many startups do one of these points well, few do both very well.
This is a fantastic idea and I'm really excited to start using this - I wanted to develop this kind of program for a while.
This is my use case: I work with designers who are hesitant to use git and make changes really quick and test them on a live WP or similar site. Often times we have two or three people needing to edit a single css file and everyone has to open/close the file often to not overwrite the changes of others. Maybe there is a better workflow, but a collaborative editing tool like this will go a long way in streamlining this process.
Hoping to launch http://protocases.com soon - it's a site that allows users to design iPhone cases for 3D printing with an editor, templates or uploading an image.
For perspective on pricing and different plan information, I built the following tool last week:
Reminds me of the good ol' days when JavaScript was just used for annoying cursor effects and the like.
https://tinkercad.com is another one that I have been using lately. It seems to be focused on editing more, but the community and library are quite good as well.
I'm always amazed at how well WebGL works - I used to think that 3D intensive applications would be one thing that would/could not be converted from desktop app to web app.
This is fascinating! I would love to know the process that the author went through to find these, i.e. did they just pan over a large area or did they target certain geographic features. It's interesting that there are entries from such a wide variety of countries.
A few notes:
- The 'Get Started' button needs to be placed and styled more prominently - it took me longer than it should have to find it.
- Adding glyphs takes the user out of editing mode
- I would have the Facebook and Twitter buttons on the main menu, i.e. don't nest them. Having a few blue buttons on the otherwise black menu should increase CTR for sharing
- If possible, add more color options. I'm not sure what your printing setup is, but I really didn't like the available colors. I prefer navy blue and black shirts.
- In the order form, all the options on dropdown menus are unreadable - they are light grey on light grey
- $29 for one single sided shirt? I wish I would have known before going through the creation process!!! Can I buy in bulk for cheaper? Can I get double sided printing?
Hope this helps.
I will be graduating college soon and getting paid in equity is the last thing I want, regardless of the job market.
I need money to pay off student loans, rent, food, gas, etc... Equity in startups is highly illiquid and turns out to be worthless more often than not; I can't take that risk.
I'm not sure exactly what the sweet spot demographic for this site is, but I don't see it being me or my peers.
